Well, aside from actually reviewing this item, I was actually impressed with it... I was a bit concerned in the beginning, when I couldn't easily access the cable ends, but after getting it out the initial time, it was a piece of cake thereafter... I sent a note to the rep that sent it to me, hopefully he will pass along the comment regarding the split ring...

I can see where the leather may be a bit of an issue for prolonged use, but I think any other material (softer) would have a bit of a problem protecting the cable running through it...
