Unfortunately, Orange have a nasty habit of embedding some of their customisations in the main ROM, rather than the Ext_ROM making it very hard to circumvent them.
They have then been known to add Application Locking preventing more mainstream (and free!) programs being installed/run.
There will in due time probably be some App Unlocking software developed by one of the stalwarts, but until then we will need to be sure the device is usable before splashing out. As an example, look at Orange's recent announcment of Orange Live MEssenger- its version of WLM which it omits from its ROMs. OLM is a paid for service, and Orange utilize port blocking to prevent the use of the free WLM. Current devices have been around long enough for these strategies to be worked around, but a new device may be harder to 'crack'
