Thanks for the information. I might try out BandSwitch which I found, which allows switching between 3G and 2G. Most of the time, I am using it for push email and stuff, so will see how I get on with 2G, and use Bandswitch to change to 3G when needed (unless there is a setting to turn 3G on and off, but I cant see this on the phone as standard).

3G/HSDPA is only really relevant when exchanging large amounts of data; for email, Instant Messaging and light web surfing, GSM is perfectly adequate.
