Not tried it myself on a Ubuntu bx, but my colleague's Ubuntu laptop works perfectly with his Tytn II as modem.

I think you may be able to tweak the bluetooth settings to use it wirelessly, but that would drain the phone battery faster than you could shake your booty (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/06/24/orange_kinetic_phone_charger/)
