Re: CoPilot Live! (7) Review

The main reason it's not so high points wise is not for the menu button, that's a bit of a nit pick, but for the lack of speed controlled volume, meaning going from motorway to urban driving I need to change the volume and back again. I see that as a major issue that requires adjustment while driving. That's unacceptable in my book. The other issue is the routing preferences which I've also covered earlier, and for me is a big issue.

Speed wise it's pretty good, but not the fastest.

Re: CoPilot Live! (7) Review

I've just upgraded from Co Pilot 6 to 7 on my iPAQ. Maybe the upgrade didn't quite work and I need to do a factory reset first but I get no options for Text to Speech - just the traditional WAV files.

Have ALK removed the more detailed text to speech options? I just get things like 'Just ahead turn right' CP 6 would read out road numbers/names as well.

I'll have to go and check but I'm sure there's the facility to have spoken road names etc.

Re: CoPilot Live! (7) Review

I tried a full factory reset on the ipaq and installed it again, but still no spoken road names - just what I would refer to as the 'WAV' files of previous versions.

From what I can see text to speech isn't there now. Despite the marketing info saying it is. I have opened a support case with ALK UK, and will report back what I find from them.

However if you can fidn a way to turn spoken road names etc on let me know!

Regards
CLive

I must admit that is an option I miss too now you mention it, and unless it is very well hidden it may have been removed.

Great review, thanks for this. Almost pulled the trigger straight away.

However, I have a question:

How difficult is it to move devices on Copilot. I switch PocketPCs maybe 3 times a year, and at the moment am running both an Advantage and a Treo750V. Using TOMTOM is a nightmare in this situiation with their licencing agreements. What's the score with ALK?

Re: CoPilot Live! (7) Review

It's about as easy as it could be really.

Quote:
The CoPilot software is supplied on its media as a generic package that has to be activated using a licence code. This is supplied within the package. Once the code is entered the device will register itself. If you do not have an internet connection on your device you can register over email and enter an activation key that gets provided by return email. Due to the nature of this authentication procedure you can port your CoPilot software easily between both ROM and device upgrades. There are no limits on quantity or frequency of activations and reactivations. Only that just one device can be active at any time. To move your licence to a new device you will only need to enter the licensing applet on the device and deactivate each of your authenticated maps and services. Once this is complete you can install CoPilot on your new/upgraded device and then licence the newly installed copy as you did previously.
So basically you deactivate the licence your device and Copilot goes away and updates its servers. Then you type your activation code into the licence key box on your new device (once installed, but bear in mind you don't have to uninstall/reinstall, just activate/deactivate). Copilot goes away and validates it on its servers and that's it done. You can do this as many times as you wish. Takes 2 minutes.

Re: CoPilot Live! (7) Review

Now that is how software licensing should be done. You pay for one licence, you can use it on one device at a time, swap devices without limit and without the developer being involved. Fair to both the purchaser and the developer.

Yep, it's an excellent system, and I used it several times without a hitch.
