A-GPS is a superset of GPS (in WinMo terms that is- Apple see it differently!) so the cell tower info augments the data obtained from the orbiters.

The Diamond does have a full 12 Channel Satellite receiver so should be capable of sustaining a link in most situations. However there have been reports that it loses some connectivity at times, for an unknown reason.

Installing Copilot is easy. All you need to do is install Copilot Central (the PC version) and it will detect your Diamond, and download the software and any updated maps for it. You then just install it, using your old licence key and the reactivate it. This will then stop mean the Orbit 2 one will be deactivated.

Re: Review: O2 Xda Ignito

There are definite problems with the Ignito (and all HTC Diamond variants) with the GPS system losing the lock for unknown reasons - it's not down to AGPS cell receptivity. Most of the time the lock is regained after exiting and restarting the relevant GPS applicaiton, but on some occasions a soft reset is required.

Yes the GPS has been one of my big moans on the Diamond and it's variants all along, and as I have already stated I am sure it is due to the compact size of the Diamond and it's smaller GPS antenna.

Re: Review: O2 Xda Ignito

Having held an HTC touch Diamond whilst it was charging its battery, I noticed the back of the device heating up somewhat disconcertingly. Does this problem happen with the XDA ignito or does it run cool whilst in use/ charging?

Also it has been reported that use of larger batteries hinders the ability of the HTC diamond to function as a GPS device, blocking its signal (certainly with the 1800mAh extended battery, which sticks out like a sore thumb, perhaps physically blocking the GPS signal). Have you had a chance to test the extended battery yet?

Congratulations on the comprehensive review, now I'm just waiting for the right deal before I take the plunge!

Re: Review: O2 Xda Ignito

The only time I've noticed the Ignito getting hot is under two circumstances:

- When the battery has been run quite far down and has a way to charge.
- When extendes use is made of the GPS.

The manual does state that it is normal for the machine to get warm under those circumstances.

I've got the extended battery installed permanently now but unfortunately have not had the time to use it extenisvely as I'm still between jobs and the 'in work' travel oppurtunities are not there.

Strangely enough though I've noticed that the extended battery does not get as warm when charging.

Re: Review: O2 Xda Ignito

Thank you for an excellent review which I found encouraging and disconcerting at the same time.

I currently have an original Orbit and am fed up with the number of times it does not recognise the micro card making my Tom Tom useless as it cannot see the maps on the card. I returned it once, it was no better on its return and currently refuses to read the card 100% of the time. So to see a 4gb drive on the Ignito made me think what an ideal machine it was for me, but later on in the review (in the summing up as a con) you mention data corruption!

Does this mean I could lose Tom Tom yet again while on the road and be in the same position as with my current Orbit! Unless I did not read your review properly, I did not see any further explanation of this problem, so please do not take my comments as a critisism, just a simple question (from a simpleton perhaps).

As an aside, do you think that CoPilot is as good as TT, I have seen flares about both which appear very one sided so would appreaciate your comments.

Kind regards,

Peter

Re: Review: O2 Xda Ignito

I've had the Orange version of the Diamond since early July, and despite a few ROM changes, and a lot of copying large files back and forth, I've not seen any issues with corruption.

CPL or TTN seems to be a personal choice thing ultimately. I don't like CPL because (in my region at least) it chooses some very odd routes, where TTN and iGO choose the correct route.

Re: Review: O2 Xda Ignito

Hi Peter. I think the general consensus seems to be that the routing is better in TTN but the map coverage is better in CPL. If you generally stick to mainland UK or Europe then TTN is probably the better choice. If, however, you occasionally go "off the beaten track" then it might be worth putting up with CPL's occasional routing foibles. It gets you there. Just not necessarily by the quickest or shortest route!
