Is that why it needs to be able to stick to the side of a fridge?
That's Mackaby's Ameo on his fridge mate, but yeah, it does come in handy!

That multimedia fridge, how much? I'd want it to make the food as well as cool it for 7 grand!

Dave, thankyou. A really clear, well structured review for a dauntingly complex device.
If it wasn't for the eternal dilemmas of 'do I hang on for WM6; a mouse pointer; the HTC Shift; to come out', I'd have already got one of these delicious devices.
What was it called again? oh, yes, the HTC fridgemagnet

The mouse pointer thingy seems to be sorted now Pie. Paul at Modaco tweaked a different driver and got it working. Not tried it myself yet but I've a few people are saying it works.

Dave, thanks. Got the cab file. Now all I need is the fridge magnet!

Re: T-Mobile Ameo (HTC Athena) Review

Great review Dave, echoes my thoughts pretty much. There are a few niggling things I've found.
1. I turn off my phone at night, but I can't seem to get it out of flight mode in the morning? Reboot does it - but a bit annoying. Does anyone else have this?

2. I've had a few problems with my stereo Bluetooth headset (Sony Ericsson HBH-DS970), both with calls and playing music via Pocket Player. This is perhaps more to do with Bluetooth. Anyway I've changed some registry settings and the new version of Pocket Player does seem to fix a few issues - most I hope. I'll let you know.

Other comments would be.. Yep it's a brick, but a well designed one that does fit in my jacket pocket. I do take it out with me... even on Saturday nights... jeez what do you guys do on a Saturday night? Evening of Northern Soul?

Even though I haven't quite got my OS X interface converted for this screen yet (Wisbar), what I do have looks bloomin' lovely...

Lots of good stuff in the box, (I agree they should include the multi-cable thingy - like the one from Expansys,) I tried the AntiVirus software but it seemed to make the machine unstable?.

If I were on the road, this and a copy of Conduits slide show software would be all I'd need. OK, perhaps an external keyboard and mouse. (By the way did anyone get the mouse pointer working with a usb mouse or have a driver?)

I've already filled my MicroDrive with FLAC files - sigh....and I may have to get another battery, which is a good sign as it means I'm using it a lot. Has anyone tried out the funky base stations yet?

I'll let you know if there is more. Roll on WM6 - there is going to be a WM6 for this?

Russ

Re: T-Mobile Ameo (HTC Athena) Review

Hi Russ, there will be WM6 for this, whether TMobile UK will release a ROM with it on will be a different matter. HTC have confirmed they will be producing the Advantage, their version with WM6 on at some point.

Not sure about the flight mode thing, I'll give it a couple of tries and report back.

The Bluetooth thing is strange for me. It was rock solid for the whole 2 weeks I've had the device until the day before yesterday whereby now I have to soft reset to get my Headphones to pick up. Weird. Hard reset time I think. That said, it's still the best implementation of BT on any of the WM5 devices I have.

Great review! This device is not for me though... I am curious why they did not use flash memory for the 8Gb [ala iPod nano] wouldn't that be more energy efficient? I am envious of the 5" screen though since it's a bigger screen than my current PC [SONY VAIO VGN-UX280P which has 4.5" screen]... I saw the dopod U1000 [Asian ver] being sold in HKG at a little less than HKD 8,000

Paul from Modaco has tweaked a driver to make it work, I'll find a link to it.

Price I would think. The flash memory is quite a bit more expensive than Microdrives.

Dave, nice review. One word missing 'ear' from in the Ergonomics paragraph.

Love the pictures too, but this fella is much to big for me.

Cheers
Howard
