Re: www.4smartphone.net reviewed - Hosted Exchange mail serv

Does 4smartphone support SSL? My incoming server requires SSL via port 995. I tried setting up Option 3 pull from my email server, and I couldn't get it figured out. I'd like to try this out, but I don't want to change all of my email without trying it.

I don't use SSL here, but I know that logging onto the 4Smartphone server uses SSL passwording, so it might be worth dropping thier support team a line.

Just signed up for the trial after updating my Universal with the I-mate beta rom and I can confirm that push email really does work!

Re: www.4smartphone.net reviewed - Hosted Exchange mail serv

Old topic, but great review!

I'm hoping someone can help me with the outlook portion setup. Without going into a long story, I created my exchange profile using the one supplied by 4smartphone and initially synced just fine. However, I had some issues and ended up removing the exchange profile from outlook, re-importing my backup pst file and then I tried to use the supplied prf file from 4smartphone to re-configure things.

The second time I attempted to use the prf file, outlook opened, but nothing happens after that. It doesn't ask me for a login, or where to import my pst file from - nothing. Outlook just opens as usual. I've tried repairing outlook, rebooted my pc, etc., but nothing is working.

Does anyone have any idea how I can get my 4smartphone profile loaded the second time around?

Thanks for any help.

Hi js- welcome to 4WinMobile!

I'm not sure how to fix your problem, as I'm not an Outlook expert, but I suspect that reimorting your data from the backup.pst file has broken the Exchange settings.

As you probably know, using a hosted Exchange Server like 4SP means that your local system doesn't use *.pst files (if you have local cacheing enabled, then a local copy of your data is kept in your local settings/application data/microsoft/outlook folder with a *.ost extension).

My initial advice would be to create a new Email account, which will spawn the Email wizard, from where you should be able to specify Exchange Server settings. You can then disable send/receive on your previous account, copy over any new messages/contacts etc from the pst account to the Exchange account, then delete the older account.

Thanks for the quick response. As you can see, I'm "exchange-challenged"..... Anyway, I ended up having to delete about 7 mail profiles and an old ost file, then I was able to run the 4SP .prf file again just fine - it's syncing right now. This does look like a great option for me with my Cingular 8125.

A few questions though:
1) After the trial, if I decide NOT to sign up for a year, how do I get all of my mail, calendar, etc. back into a personal folder and go back to the way things were?

2) I know you said the "backups" will now be saved in an .ost file, but how would I re-import that if I had to re-install windows, etc.?

3) Why would I want to work "offline" on my home computer? This would simply make changes to my home pc without uploading them to the server until I connect again? Not sure why I would need to do this.

Silly questions I'm sure, but I'd appreciate any further thoughts.

Hi js- glad you've got it working again!

1) I'm not sure! But 4SP have a good customer services setup, so an email to them should give the answers.

2) The *.ost file is not techically a backup file- it is your 'live data' as of the time of last sync, for offline use. I don't think you can restore from the ost file.

3) As from above- many people use 'offline' mode on laptops etc, where they are not always connected to the internet. Using a 'non-cached ' mode would mean you would have no access to data when you weren't connected, or if the connection was down for some reason. As you say, if you are always connected to the internet (or your intranet if your own server) then you wouldn't need cached mode.

I think teh way to get your data back into a PST file os to create a secondary email acount which will use a PST, then copy and paste from the Exchange account.

Never done it myself but that is what a colleage said he did! There must be an easier way but I've never had the need to do it so far.

To get your data out of Outlook just got to the file menu and choose import/export, export to a file and choose pst from the available options, that pst can then be used to reimport the data into a bew mail profile.

Done from memory as on the minis right now.

Later days - Dave=
