Re: M900 owners: Acer needs your help troubleshooting problems!!

Please answer the questions only and keep on topic or posts will be removed, this is to help all M900 users after all.

1. As a user are you using the stock 160 OS or one downloaded from the Acer FTP when you have issues?
YES

2. Has anyone else seen the lost phone signal issue (such as a cell tower crash), after which the M900 doesn't then hunt for a fresh signal and relock?
NO

3. Have you had poor GSM reception at all?
HAVEN'T REALLY NOTICE THIS, BUT WILL MONITOR IT MORE CLOSELY. USING TELSTRA IN AUSTRALIA

4. Low sound level - Is the sound level low with the speaker or receiver or both, and under what enviroment or circumstances do you see the problem?
YES, THIS IS A PROBLEM. IT IS WORST THAN MY ETEN x500.

5. The blank screen of death issue - describe how it happened, and is there any particular circumstance under which this issue can be seen.
IT HAS HAPPEN A FEW TIMES. I BELIEVE IT IS IN THE ACER UI. WHEN SELECTING PROGRAMS, OR TRYING TO USE TOUCH IN PROGRAMS, OR USE THE QUICK LINK, THE SCREEN IS SLOW TO RESPOND AND SOMETIMES, IT TAKES 5 TIMES BEFORE A PROGRAM LOCKS IN. VERY FRUSTRATING.

6. Connection settings lost after a reset - Try the following and the settings should stick, let me know the result please:

A. open connections from start--> setting--> connection--> connections

B. Click add new modem connection, select cellular Line (GPRS), press next

C. Put any word in access point name icon

D. Leave user name and password empty the click next to complete setting

E. Select the GPRS setting you just set up , then softreset

F. After system boot up then go to start--> setting--> connection--> connections again, the setting should still exist.
I HAVEN'T EXPERIENCED THIS. I AM USING TELSTRA'S NEXT-G HSDPA

7. Choppy video quality is a known issue, however, if possible please let me know which benchmark phone you compare with.
THIS IS A TRICKY AREA. I HAVE PLAYED A VIDEO WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS, EXCEPT FOR LOW VOLUME WITH DEVICE. IT IS REALLY IMPORTANT FOR USERS TO MAKE SURE THE VIDEOS BEING USED ON THE DEVICE IS BEING MADE FOR PPC USE. THERE ARE SOME GOOD PC PROGRAMS THAT CAN DO THIS.

8. Have you the M900 user considered returning the phone to the supplier because of video quality?
NO. I WILL DO FURTHER TESTING.

9. I have found video call quality to be fine, have other M900 owners tried it between different makes of handsets, if so how did you get on?
HAVE NOT TRIED THAT FEATURE YET.

I WOULD LIKE TO BE ABLE TO EDIT THE PHOTO ALBUM PROGRAM, SO THAT I CAN CHOOSE THE LOCATION OF WHERE I KEEP MY IMAGES. I.E. SD CARD.

I WOULD LIKE MORE OPTIONS OF WHICH PROGRAMS I WANT TO LOAD INTO MEMORY AT THE VERY FIRST STARTUP. ESPECIALLY BECAUSE THERE IS LITTLE MEMORY IN THIS PHONE. THIS PHONE WOULD HAVE BEEN IDEAL WITH 256/512.

I ALSO FOUND A BUG THAT IS INTERMITTANT. SOMETIMES ( HAPPENED 3 TIMES ) THE PHONE WAS TURNED OFF AND THEN WOULDN'T TURN ON. I COULD SEE THE BLUE AND GREEN LIGHTS FLASHING, BUT I HAD TO SOFT RESET THE DEVICE EACH TIME.

I ALSO FOUND THE MICRO SD SLOT A LITTLE HARD TO PUT IN THE SD CARD AT TIMES, IT GOT CAUGHT ON SOMETHING, AND HAVE TO WIGGLE IT AROUND TO GET IT IN AT TIMES. ETEN x500 WAS ALWAYS SMOOOTH.

I TRIED TO LOAD BOTH RESCO AND SPB NEW KEYBOARDS, BUT COULDN'T GET THE HEBREW LANGAUGE TO WORK AS A SECOND LANGUAGE. WORKS OKAY WITH MY ETEN x500. I HARD RESET THE m900 PHONE AND TRIED IT AND IT STILL WOULDN'T WORK. I HOPE ACER FIXES THIS, AS I AM GOING TO LIVE IN ISRAEL IN 2 MONTHS FOR A FEW YEARS.

EDIT 29-06-09:
I have for the time being resorted to Nalim's, bare bones ACER ROM without the ACER UI. I use SPB Mobile Sheel 3 as my UI. I never get a white screen of death and everything runs very FAST.

I really like the ACER UI, but until it has less bloatware ( more options on install to choose what programs the user wants ) and the buggyness is resolved, I will stay with SPB MS3.

I doubt they'll be able to take any of your point into account, as you are NOT using an official ROM, you're using a modified version of it.

1. As a user are you using the stock 160 OS or one downloaded from the Acer FTP when you have issues?
-Using the stock OS.

2. Has anyone else seen the lost phone signal issue (such as a cell tower crash), after which the M900 doesn't then hunt for a fresh signal and relock?
-No.

3. Have you had poor GSM reception at all?
-Yes. I live in poor place for GSM. This is no worse than other phones, but it seems like it has more difficulty reconnecting. Also with good reception the signal level bounces up and down between 2 and 4 bars.

4. Low sound level - Is the sound level low with the speaker or receiver or both, and under what enviroment or circumstances do you see the problem?
-Seems ok to me.

5. The blank screen of death issue - describe how it happened, and is there any particular circumstance under which this issue can be seen.
-No, but I don't use acer shell.

6. Connection settings lost after a reset - Try the following and the settings should stick, let me know the result please:
-I don't use GPRS and haven't had a chance to check with a dummy connection

7. Choppy video quality is a known issue, however, if possible please let me know which benchmark phone you compare with.
- with youtube, the video looks choppy. I haven't tried video files yet.

8. Have you the M900 user considered returning the phone to the supplier because of video quality?
-No.

9. I have found video call quality to be fine, have other M900 owners tried it between different makes of handsets, if so how did you get on?
-No videocalls

Re: M900 owners: Acer needs your help troubleshooting problems!!

I hope my replies help

1. As a user are you using the stock 160 OS or one downloaded from the Acer FTP when you have issues?
160

2. Has anyone else seen the lost phone signal issue (such as a cell tower crash), after which the M900 doesn't then hunt for a fresh signal and relock?
NO

3. Have you had poor GSM reception at all?
NO worse than with my previous phones

4. Low sound level - Is the sound level low with the speaker or receiver or both, and under what enviroment or circumstances do you see the problem?
SOUND is really low even when on MAX. In loud environments (busy street) it's impossible to use the phone.

5. The blank screen of death issue - describe how it happened, and is there any particular circumstance under which this issue can be seen.
I have had it once or twice, cant remember how it happened. Only battery removal can fix it.

6. Connection settings lost after a reset - Try the following and the settings should stick, let me know the result please:

A. open connections from start--> setting--> connection--> connections

B. Click add new modem connection, select cellular Line (GPRS), press next

F. After system boot up then go to start--> setting--> connection--> connections again, the setting should still exist.

Settings still exist

7. Choppy video quality is a known issue, however, if possible please let me know which benchmark phone you compare with.
NA

8. Have you the M900 user considered returning the phone to the supplier because of video quality?
NO

9. I have found video call quality to be fine, have other M900 owners tried it between different makes of handsets, if so how did you get on?

Video was choppy when I ran a 720p video. I have ran other videos in lower resolution without problems.

Earpiece volume is low and somewhat scratchy. Only a problem in loud environments

NO

9. I have found video call quality to be fine, have other M900 owners tried it between different makes of handsets, if so how did you get on?

Well, yes it is modified and no it should not matter because the things I took out are not affecting any of the items listed.

The core of the ROM is exactly the same, no tickering with WM6.1 or the radio, bluetooth stack or any of that. Just took out software that is preinstalled.

how would my modified EXTROM folder have any impact on these items? 2,3,4,5,6 (well without the ATT cab I have no connection at all because the connection manager is not able to set them correctly for the US), 7 and 9 have not been tested by me anyway.

Now if I took the stock rom and made all sorts updates to the XIP and other DLL's I could understant your remark and I would not state my findings here.

Hope I made sense. After all I want to help to make this a great device and an even greater experience for us if Acer takes these comments to heart and fixes some of the issues we have outlined. Right ??

True, but short of analysing your ROM, Acer really have no way of telling just what you've taken out or added. I'm not saying you have, I'm just saying they can't really take it as gospel, you know?

No company will ever note bug reports on unofficial ROMS, no matter how good they may be. They can't afford to do that.

Re: M900 owners: Acer needs your help troubleshooting problems!!

Well I finally went out and bought a charger so I could use my phone again and just got the BSOD again. This was after another hard-reset of the phone without installing Wisbar, PhoneAlarm, and after unloading the Acer Shell. It's certainly better, having happened once in 48 hours of use as opposed to 8-10 per day, but it's still a problem. I noticed that the buttons on the bottom would light up when I hit the power button (so it was still responsive on some level), but the screen backlight would not go on. I really wonder if Acer built a bugged backlight driver, since I know PA and Wisbar both utilize it (don't know about Acer Shell, but I'd imagine that's poorly coded overall so who knows what it's messing up). Oh, and it was also connected to my computer at the time, if that has anything to do with it.

Edit: Forget it, it froze AGAIN today, wasn't connected. So basically, there's no rhyme or reason to it.
