Re: Why I despise the iPhone.
That's a difficult one as it depends how you use each device. My iPhone gets heavily used for playing music both in to and out from work each day (3 hours/day), in addition to Exchange Push email, web browsing, phone calls, texts etc etc. I also have a Touch Pro - but my useage was very different as I had a separate iPod for media playing. By definition then my iPhone battery gets a bigger pounding than my WM device ever did. Having said that it is very rare than I run out of battery at the end of the day and usually have around 20% left when I put it on charge that evening. Unfortunately I cannot make a comparision with the Touch Pro.
Each person will discover their own pattern of use and battery life. The only 'big' down side with the iPhone is the lack of a user changeable battery. At least with the WM device I could have a spare ready charged, or if the battery became faulty it was easy to change it. The iPhone however requires a maintenance return for replacement. That wasn't a show stopper for me - but I could see that it might be for some.

Re: Why I despise the iPhone.
As Griph says, each different person will use different amounts of battery per day according to their usage. Why not have a think about your daily usage, let use know how much time you spend on:
Phonecalls,
SMS,
Email (Exchange or not)
Bluetooth (on or off, headset use?)
Wifi,
GPS,
Music,
Games,
Ebooks,
Other general "device on" times.
Then we can see if anyone else matches your pattern and see how their battery lasts.

I've heard that there are still some unresolved issues with the 3gs heating up and draining the battery really fast:

If you must go with a 3gs, I'd recommend at least waiting until these have been properly addressed by Apple.

Re: Why I despise the iPhone.
For me as I've got 8 months to go on my contract it would have been very expensive, buying out the contract and getting the new machine.

Re: Why I despise the iPhone.
My curent usage can vary alot, but lets say the following usage:
Phonecalls - 30mins
Email - difficult to pinpoint but lets say download / send 3Mb worth
GPS - 15mins
Music - 30mins
Overall this would be a heavy day for me, but maybe a lot less usage that Griph.
Thanks for highlighting the battery issue, looks like using GPS for long periods would be the main concern.

Re: Why I despise the iPhone.
That's almost the same as my own phone usage although I use probably 30 minutes WiFi internet too but maybe a little less calls. I would expect to get 2 days charge out of my WM devices with that usage (it's what I get with the Zest, Diamond, Touch Pro 2).
Anyone got similar iPhone habits to compare?

£538 for a 32gb PAYG, or £440 for the same as you have now, and you could get a decent amount of that back by selling your old one, esp if you apply the new unlock first?
Not done it yet, currently going through a period of looking for the perfect phone again.
Have been on the iPhone for 12 months now, never had a phone (or contract) that long before, and rejected quite a few WM phones in the interim, Touch HD came close to iPhone, but boy the cap vs res screen really does make a huge difference.
Sitting here waiting for 2 phones to arrive today, a Samsung i8910, and a Nokia N96, see if either of those do it for me

The iPhone would cope with that I think, my 3G one about a year old, charged several times a day (topped up I mean) would easily get through that.
I do also carry a little Kensington battery thing with me, you charge it via USB and then plug it into the iPhone.
It can stay on in your pocket and puts a good charge into the iPhone. £35 ish, and worth it I think.
The other thing about iPhone, is that if you run out of power, it is amazing the number of shops that have various iPod capable devices that you can pretend to be interested in, whilst putting a few mins charge in
The girl in the local O2 shop thought I was VERY interested in a 3GS the other day, when in reality, I was giving MY iPhone a quick top up

Re: Why I despise the iPhone.
Oo, I'd be interested to hear what the screen is like on the Omnia HD, it's an OLED capacitive jobby isn't it?

Re: Why I despise the iPhone.
It is indeed and I can't wait to get a good look at it. The only other OLED screen I've seen (of a reasonable size) was one of those Sony 10" TV's and that was the brightest, clearest screen I've ever seen.
