i'm not too sure how well it would stack up running say four or five background apps because mine seems to become slower the more i have on it e.g. if i don't delete sms messages the sms app takes ages to load, if i have 5 or more tabs open in safari it takes ages to open, if i am listening to music via bluetooth it skips when loading the email app etc. It doesn't seem to manage its' memory very well.
TBH i loved my iphone when i first got it and still use it daily but the way it's performance has degraded is a cause for concern.
It could just be specific to mine and i may have a hardware fault but nonetheless it's very frustrating and even worse coupled with the appauling battery life.
Mines under a year old and a full charge lasts from 7am till around 2pm now. When i got it it lasted nearly two days of similar use.
If the hero turns out to be a suitable replacement i'll be flogging it and getting something else to play with instead.
Of course i'll be sending it in for a once over first

The good thing about Apple is they will just swap for a new one if there is a fault, no refurb but brand new.

Not always, my son got a refurb for his 3G (but that was through O2). Apple shops like to send them away too....

Did they not state that it would massively degrade performance (including battery life) and reliability? I know no-one on here likes to admit it but multi-tasking on WM results in instability with even MS apps being so poorly written that they leak memory like a sieve.
I honestly don't miss multi-tasking and am more than happy with the concept of running one app at a time if it means that I never see the "not enough memory" message again

Re: Why I despise the iPhone.
Surely it could be restricted to running essential apps in the background, like google lattitude or IM, apps that really are designed and require background operation? That's the key here, realtime apps are stymied on the iPhone...
I'm not afraid to admit anything, WM isn't perfect, but as stated, it's far more usable in my opinion due to the multi-tasking, I'd rather the device be a little unstable and infinitely more usable than stable and effective neutered...
C'mon Apple, do the right thing, I'd be willing to lose a little stability to gain more functionality...

Re: Why I despise the iPhone.
It all goes back to us not being regular users Jim. We'd live with it, and even prefer it (except Ian) but Apple thinks, and they're probably right, that regular users would not be prepared to live with it. Certainly my missus wouldn't.

Yep, I think that sums it up... Sue wouldn't put up with it either.

Re: Why I despise the iPhone.
I usually look at these things with my support hat on, I have around 150 data phone users and supporting WM is a pain in the rear. The vast majority of my users are far from experts and expect their phone to just work, most of them want the phone functionality, email and a little bit of web surfing. Having to regularly restart their phone because it gets progressively slower over a few days use is something that they just don't understand.
As for Google Latitude and IM being "essential apps" Jim, I hope that was intended to be funny cos it certainly made me laugh

Re: Why I despise the iPhone.
For some folks IM can be an essential though mate, not sure as whether I'd class Latitude in that area though
IMHO Apple should allow specially designed apps to run in the background, toggleable by the user, at their risk

Re: Why I despise the iPhone.
Yeah, I didn't really mean lattitude, probably a bad example! IM is definitely one, I use Office Communicator Mobile & Palringo regularly on my device.
I agree with that Daron, allow the user to decide... Although I can see the point that Ian is making as well, most folks do just want the phone to work!!
