Must say that I have been thinking about that - but not gone ahead with it. Not sure of what the Pro's and Con's are - and as the 3GS is only a few weeks old I didn't want to b@gger up any warranty/insurance. Might think about it when the warranty expires.

That's one hell of an expensive unlocking! It's £538 on PAYG for gawds sake, I think maybe they've had one too many late nights at eXpansys

For the 3gs the jailbreak and sim unlock requires you to capture a couple of temp files during a restore so may be worth grabbing them before Apple plug the hole.

I'm not exactly sure on the procedure as mines a 3g but well worth checking out

It is the only "safe" option though for many people that want an iPhone 3GS and don't want to be tied to O2, and also have the luxury of a warranty with an official unlocked device without having to jailbreak it.

How 'safe' is it though? If O2 still have the UK sole rights, are these ones grey imports? If so, what is Apple's position on any warranty claims?

Apple have the "network" exclusive. It's can't be sold with any other contract. Legally, it still has to be available SIM Free to avoid competition rules. They're available in a similar form (though much cheaper!) in the Isle of Man where there is no O2 (kind of).

The question I'd have with this is will Jailbreaking erase the device during the process? I can see that jailbreaking will weaken the security of the device by making it easier to bypass the encryption and protection that currently exists within the 3Gs.

Jailbreaking allows the installing of apps that are not apple approved.

Then it's down to you to decide what you install and where from.

Once you install your jailbroken firmware you restore your files and settings etc
