Re: Why I despise the iPhone.
Actually, I've not been able to find many details on this except that it seems to be a service SMS. Windows Mobile has had a security policy in it to restrict service SMS to trusted sources since I think WM6. I would have thought that would render these security issues inert.

Re: Why I despise the iPhone.
We had a virus on a WM handset this week (MDA Touch Plus), I have to admit I found it quite funny in a perverse kind of way, it was randomly texting and phoning people in the early hours apparently

Re: Why I despise the iPhone.
Another good advert for tools like SBSH Phoneweaver or SPB Phone Suite to profiles... My phone switches of sounds overnight to stop me being woken by rogue texts or people ringing me at times they shouldn't! (from work that is!!)...

Re: Why I despise the iPhone.
So not a virus, but malware, then. Sorry, pedantic I know, but I'm constantly hearing (mainly from anti-virus companies!) about mobile phone "viruses". Never seen one. Never read a report on one. Very much doubt they exist. There is malware that people install themselves, ignoring the various warnings - and usually whilst trying to steal by installing cracked or warez - so malware is the very least they deserve. But no-one has EVER been able to demonstrate an actual virus to me on Symbian or WM - and I strongly suspect the same applies to iPhone and Android.

If that was so and it worked why does it say "Demonstrations at the Black Hat computer security conference revealed that smartphones based on iPhone OS, Android, and Windows Mobile are indeed vulnerable to hacking via SMS messages. Those aren't the only phones that are vulnerable, though, and security experts are working with mobile carriers and handset vendors to patch the problem."

Jim, the last virus of any note was in 2002. People don't understand the distinction between a worm, Trojan, blended attack etc but know about the term virus.

Because the security industry is full of snake oil salesmen who are intent on showing their "worth" by over-hyping theoretical attacks without regard to practicality. Plus they're testing against devices which have the security switched off by the SP's

See my post above, I don't know for certain that he didn't install something but a virus of some kind had infected his phone for sure. I just did a wipe on the device and then gave it back to him to see if it did it again along with a dumb nokia handset to swap to should anything happen
