N560 and Divx,Xvid playback?

I was wondering if this Loox support normal videoplayback of Divx and xvid movies and other formats for the matter of fact.
If it does does it work smooth and without problems? How long do batterys last when doing so?

I was also wondering if a N560 has the option to remove the battery and connect it to the power socket when the battery is not needed so you dont kills its life after time?

What about is USB connector. Can you connect an 2.5 portable hard drive to it and read movie from it?

The N560 has the fastest processor available at present, and will happily play DiVX movies. You do need an additional player though, as WMP won't do it. TCPMP is the one most of us use- and it is free!

Their main site is actually down at present, but you can see details Here

I don't know how loing the battery would last, but if you keep the screen brightness low, it ought to do around 2 hours.

I think you can run it with the battery removed, but there is no advantage in doing so. The N560 uses a LiIon battery, and these work much better when trickle charged. They don't exhibit the charge effect, unlike the older NiMH batteries which deteriorated if charged too often, or when not empty.

Although it has USB host cabability, it won't pass power to a USB device, unless the mains cable is plugged in as well (even then I'm not sure!). Self powered, and very low powered devices apparently work fine (Keyboards, camaras, USB Sticks etc).

I see. Then a 3.5" Self powered External hard drive would eventually work just fine?
To bad I cant test this prior cuz thats the main reason why I would buy it apart of GPS

what about inbuil speakers does it have them or must I use headphones?

Hi, the N560 will happily control a 2.5" USB connected HD - I haven't tried a 3.5" HD, but I see no reason why that wouldn't work too.

Bear in mind the USB host only support USB 1.1 which is very slow compared to the more recent USB 2.0 so don't expect great transfer rates.

The N560 has a built in speaker that is adequate for basic sound, but you really want to plug in headphones, or powered speakers if you want to do any justice to the high quality (IMO) audio output...

There's a lot of information and tests out on the web - remember: Google is your friend!

Kind regards,

Andy B.

Yes I did use google but couldnt find any useful info about running Divx/Xvid movies on it. I mean with this the normal computer rips and not somekind of PDA rips. Just wondering how this is supposed to run smooth cuz the cpu doesnt sound to be powerful enough in this PDAs.
1.0USB is good with me since it doesnt need great transfer rates to read Xvid/Divx from a harddrive.

Hi,

Just to let you know what I do (more or less), I take a DVD, pop it into my desktop PC and use some software to grab it and shrink it down to ~640x480, DivX, and some other parameters I can't remember.

This results in a movie file that's around 900MB in size (depending on the quality setting).

Transfer this to an SD card on my N560, then use TCPMP to play the video.

Quality is fine, no jerking or tearing of the images, and sound is superb, and I've found that battery life outlasts the movie...

The CPU doesn't struggle at all - indeed, benchmarking with TCPMP, the video can play back at 2xspeed without any problems.

Bear in mind that these boxes run at 625Mhz, which, given the architecture, is far more powerful than desktop PCs were just a few short years ago...

I don't remember what software I've been using to rip the DVD movie, but it was free...

Unfortunately, I'm away on business so I can't check.

Bottom line is that movie playback on a modern PDA (N560) works just great.

www.pockettv.com was one site where I started my investigation into all of this... They have got some very useful resources.

Also check out the various PPC free software sites.

Finally, there is a wealth of benchmarking information out there...

Regards,

Andy B.

Re: N560 and Divx,Xvid playback?

I see and how its with Codecs packs. Do you have free room to install newer codecs if some movie doesnt work right like sound skipping or green layer or something or is it fixed like in most portable DVD players where you are stuck at end with a uselss movie?

I suggest you go and read up about TCPMP and give it a go. As I've said, I've had 100% success and watched four movies, and three TV episodes with no problems at all.

Andy B.
