TomTom Mapping Question

The main reason I've avoided TomTom all these yeas is that their maps only cover mainland Britain. They've never provided maps for the Isle of Man, Jersey, Guernsey or most of the Scottish Islands so they've been a bit useless for me.

However, a colleague in my Mountain Rescue Team showed me a new TomTom One XL she'd bought last week that DID have IOM maps on it. Now, my recollection is that TomTom bought their mapping supplier 18/24 months ago (was it Naviteq?). So it looks like they have finally increased the scope of their mapping. I was wondering whether anyone with a fairly recent set of either UK or Western Europe maps for the PPC version of TomTom could do a postcode search for me to see if the IOM is included on there?

IM2 4NA should give you Douglas Promenade (it's actually the postcode of the Hilton Hotel and Casino).

Re: TomTom Mapping Question

Brilliant, cheers Tony. That opens up a lot more choices then! As I understand it, TomTom licenses it's maps to a lot of other SatNav producers.

Re: TomTom Mapping Question

Cheers Mailman. Nice example. Although, if I recall correctly (and I rarely travel through Dhoon) it's the Manx "Electric" Railway. The electric tram runs from Douglas up to Laxey where you can change for the Mountain Railway straight to the top of Snaefell. Must do that again this summer. Took the boys on the Steam Train to the beach a few weeks ago. They enjoyed it nearly as much as I did

Re: TomTom Mapping Question

Weird. Just went onto their website to check prices and....

Detailed map seamlessly covering the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
Map coverage statistics:
  • countries fully covered (99.9%): England, Wales, Scotland, the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland
  • countries partially covered: Channel Islands
  • roads covered (km): nearly 588,000
  • additional information: the map doesn't cover the Isle of Man or any other overseas territories.
IS this just the usual story of the marketing department doesn't know what the mapping guys are doing?

Re: TomTom Mapping Question

That might depend on what map version you are looking at Bassey, I am running v815.2024 which I think is the latest version and it shows a detailed view of the IOM. Plus you can use the satellite view overlay.
