Black Satin & problem with car charger

Firstly thanks to JJ for the excellent Black Satin ROM upgrade

I have noticed since the install my car charger isn't working properly and couldn't find any previous threads with this topic.

I have two chargers and neither will charge the device if I connect it while the device itself is switched ON.

However if I connect the charger with the device OFF, then power the device, it charges normally. I do not have this issue with my mains charger.

Can anyone shed some light?

With thanks

EDIT: device is an iMate JASJAM

Re: Black Satin & problem with car charger

I experienced this issue once in a while especially when I use 3rd party USB charger, not the bundled one with 838pro. In my case I did soft-reset few times before it's able to charge while device is ON.

But 2nd thought, this could cause by hardware too.

Unhappy Re: Black Satin & problem with car charger

There is a thread regarding this issue on xda developers.
It would appear that the phone requires a signal on one of the pins which is not used normally and on the car chargers supplied after market this pin is not shorted hence the sporadic charging the OS appears to not think an external power source is available.

Re: Black Satin & problem with car charger

Most HTC devices will ONLY charge when the usb port on the hermes detects a valid signal source. Now what does this mean. well its two things:

1) Your phone always charges when you have it synced to your PC as the phone detects that there is sata being transmitted to it - hence it is a valid signal source because of the data transmission.

2) If there is no data, SPECIFIC HERMES Chargers fool the device to think there is a valid signal source. This is achieved by a hardware confiuration in the miniusb male jack. The jack has 5 pins in which only 4 of them have a function (Voltage, Ground and two pins for serial data). The left over pin has got no function but what the HTC hermes checks for is if this pin is also connected to Ground (or in other words, not just a floating pin). All specific hermer charges have the left over pin connected to ground. NON Specific hermes chargers will intermittently work, ie if you SR your device or if the screen is off.

Now people have modified a plain old usb charger (or in my case, a plain old usb cable that connects into a car charger with a usb slot). Well we are lucky that the left over pin is right next to the ground pin so i removed the plastic housing, shorted the two pins with some solder and then used som CABLE Shrink to finish it off neatly.

You want some advice, go buy a Specific hermes charger and not ebay generic stuff. HTC want to get your business.
