Currently the only way to be able to remote wipe your device (if it gets stolen etc) is if its managed via MS Exchange. However, someone has brought out a
freeware tool that brings this functionality to everyone.
Send an SMS msg with a password to the device and it will perform a hard reset. Obviously it won't get the device back to you but at least it will prevent the data and contacts etc from being compromised.
It also provides other remote access features:
Retrieve a contact details such as a phone number.
Appointment and task management.
The remote retrieval of a phone number sounds worth the install itself. Just imagine you have forgotten your phone (I know its impossible to believe but it might happen) and you need that number. Just use another phone and send an SMS and get the number back. Just don't forget the password for hard reset will be in the sent messages as some peoples idea of a joke may not be yours!.
There is also another program ISecretary, a full answer phone service, but thats still in Beta with some issues with newer devices - but looks good if they can resolve the problems.
