Busted XDA Orbit

I promised a friend of mine i would post this, though i doubt there is a happy solution to the problem having discussed the situation with him. Anyway here goes....

My friend is profoundly deaf and uses his XDA Orbit as his main source of communication by text message , MSN Messenger etc. I introduced him to the wonderful world of the XDA when the XDA II came out a few years back !!

Anyway he has since upgraded to the XDA Orbit and has only had it six months. he does not have the insurance with O2 on it. He carries it in his pocket without protection for the screen and does not use his carry case. personally i would have had it in a protective case but hey ho.

One day he pulled it out of his pocket to find the screen had gone kaput with purpley blotches on it. When he took it to the o2 shop they said they could do nothing to help him and apparently refused to swap it for a new one.

As i said earlier he did not have his XDA ordbit insured with o2. i have suggested he contact Trading Standards for advice. However is my friend within his right to argue with o2 that the Orbit is not very sturdy as he puts it?. I did tell him he should have kept the Orbit in a protective pouch and that i doubted he had a strong case for getting it replaced.

Advice anyone?

Re: Busted XDA Orbit

I think that he doesn't really have an option Wirral, as they will just say that it is user damage and with no insurance, accidental damage doesn't entitle one to a new device.

Re: Busted XDA Orbit

I do not think he has much of a case I am sorry to say. O2 would have had to take the Orbit back if it was faulty due to hardware or software, but breaking the screen will not I am afraid come under a warranty claim. As you say if it was insured for accidental damage etc then you would be ok. Have you checked out the home insurance policy because there maybe a slim chance that may cover it.

It is a shame, next time try and get him to buy a £20 case for it at least, it will help to save him money in the long run.

Re: Busted XDA Orbit

Think he could get a screen replaced for £85-£100, is this not cheaper than the home insurance route?

Checked ebay for faulty ones?

I am sorry to hear this i would suggest that he do get in touch with o2 and explain that he never put any pressure on the handset and get him to at least send it away for a quote, but id deffo get in touch with them as 6 months isnt a long time for a phone to last, if he puts up a good fight they may help him out spesh as he is paying a contract with them too many people have problems and if they push it o2 do help them out but he has to be willing to put up a good fight i reckon in long run it is much better to help a customer out than them spread a bad word to 20 of there friends, give it a try. At end of day what is the cost of repairing a handset or replacing it to a lot of bad mouths spreading. Im not saying ir will work but give it a go

Re: Busted XDA Orbit

Hi amziebabs and welcome to 4WM

I am glad to report that the device was fixed in the end, by a third party not O2 and the person involved is pleased with the result.
