Smile Syncing Email & Calendar

I have recently moved from my usual Outlook email address to a new HOTMAIL account to make picking up my emails on the Orbit a little easier. Windows 'Live' offers an automated piece of software on both the PC and the phone itself whcih makes email syncing easy, but the calendar and contacts database on the Orbit will seemingly only sync with Outlook, not the PC Windows 'live' software. Anyone got a solution?

Re: Syncing Email & Calendar

I've never had a go with the live solution, but I am sure that one of the other MODS have and will leave an answer some time later... If I come across a solution for you, I'll post it...

Re: Syncing Email & Calendar

When I first had my unlimited data plan I considered using my Hotmail account to do exactly what you are wanting.

However - I have found with the Live app (even the latest release) that contacts do not sync correctly.

Also - I've never managed to get the calendar to sync and that was important to me as well.

Have you considered something like mail2web's offering? I set up an email address with mail2web (yourname@mail2web.com) and forwarded my emails to that account from GMail (my main email account). Mail2Web also provides full outlook functionality (so I could sync my calendar and my contacts) but I loved the fact that I could access Outlook through any web browser on the planet

All of this was FREE! The only issue with Mail2Web free service is that HTML email is not supported (as it is Exchange 2003, not 2007) and when sending emails from my device, you are unable to send them via your standard account (in my case GMail) so your recipients will see your email address as yourname@mail2web.com - a small sacrifice to pay for a free hosted exchange account.

Find out more information on mail2web here.

This isn't an advert and I am not connected to mail2web - they simply provide a good service for free.

Other services available include the Yahoo Go! service, and also GMail homepage provides nice access to the GMail calendar.

Let us know how you get on.

Re: Syncing Email & Calendar

Agreed I do sue Hotmail on my machine along side exchange, but turn off syncing of everythign apart from hotmail messages itself as there are a lot of sync problems with contacts - or at least there were last time I tried it!

Re: Syncing Email & Calendar

Cheers for the mail2web tip firstbuddah. I was looking around for an Exchange solution. I'd already tried 4smartphone.net (pretty good) and 1and1 (not so great for my needs) but found mail2web really straight forward. For a start, they provide a .cab file to setup your device to work with their system.

The web client is very good, but I think I'll end up going with the paid for version so I can use a desktop client from my PC once the new version of Thunderbird is out.
