Problems installing HardSPL

ok so i have a herm200 with windows mobile 5 that i want to upgrade to wm6. I found out that i needed hardspl to do the upgrade so i downloaded it and followed the instructions in mr vanx's guide, but the installation would always stop as soon as it entered the softspl bootloader screen. My hermes would just sit there and my pc would report the error:

ERROR [260] : UPDATE ERROR
The update utility cannot connect to your PDA phone. Please check that your USB cradle/cable is connected properly between the PC and your PDA Phone.

Check the following:

1. The PDA Phone is connected to the USB cradle/cable.
2. The USB cradle/cable is connected to the PC.

So after doing some research i went out and got a 1gb microsd card and formatted it in fat32. i went back to the Hard-SPL-V7.zip, renamed RUU_signed.nbh to HERMIMG.nbh and then placed it on the root of the memory stick. Then in order to check my spl and ipl; i pressed down both the POWER button and SIDE OK together and using the stylus at the same time to press the RESET button at the bottom. It showed that i had IPL-1.01 and SPL-1.11, (which i am assuming means no softSPL). So then i downloaded SSPL-HERM.zip from page 116 post 1160 @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=296722 and i copied the SSPL-HERM.exe to the memory of my phone and ran SSPL-HERM.exe from file explorer. This took me into the bootloader which now said i had IPL-SSPL by Des and SPL-1.09.ds which i am assuming means softSPL. At this point i inserted my SD card. Nothing happened. So i pressed down both the POWER button and SIDE OK together and using the stylus at the same time to press the RESET button at the bottom, and my phone rebooted back into windows mobile. The SD was still in the phone but still nothing was happening so i rebooted back into bootloader mode AND MY IPL WAS BACK TO IPL-1.01 MY SPL BACK TO SPL-1.11!!! WTF AM I DOING WRONG?!!!
Things have gotten even worse though; now i am getting an error every time i try to execute SSPL-HERM.exe "The file cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate or one of its components cannot be found". I am getting pretty sick of windows mobile 5 and these errors are making me think i have corrupted my firmware, maybe i would have better luck getting hardSPL on if i flashed a stock rom first and started over from the beginning? I am thinking this because in the sspl-herm readme it says "In case if something goes wrong during flashing you should flash your device with ROM accepted by standard bootloader (and have another try if you wish)." I am grasping at straws here guys. Any ideas??

Re: Problems installing HardSPL

Hi nodyarg and welcome to 4WM

Sorry to hear of your problems but don't give up! I would hard reset before going any further and remove the SD card, now put the Hermes into bootloader mode then connect to the PC and run the Hard SPL, don't worry about Activesync connecting by the way, and it may take a few tries.

Let us know how you get on.

Re: Problems installing HardSPL

No hard reset as in taking it back to factory settings by holding down the two soft key buttons directly below the screen, and then pressing the reset button with the stylus. You will the see a screen offering 'R' and 'X' (exit) choose 'R' to hard reset.

By the way does your device have a carriers name on it, or is it an HTC Tytn?

Re: Problems installing HardSPL

Okay well i tried what you said i removed the sd card then performed a hard reset, then entered bootloader mode, connected the usb, and ran the RUUWrapper.exe from the Hard-SPL-V7 folder. The Hermes ROM Update Utility gave me the 260 error, (The update utility cannot connect to your PDA phone. Please check that your USB cradle/cable is connected properly between the PC and your PDA Phone.), as soon as it tried to verify information on my hermes. Im guessing because the phone was in bootloader mode so it did not respond to the Update Utility.

EDIT: The hard reset made the certificate warning go away so i can now run hte SSPL-HERM.exe and successfully get into softSPL (the ipl-sspl by des thing). so i entered the soft spl bootloader and put an sd card in my device with HERMIMG.nbh on it, then pressed the power button on the side of the phone, but nothing happened.

Re: Problems installing HardSPL

Have a try of Hard SPL v9 it is more advanced, run in bootloader mode as I described before. If this doesn't work there is one more thing you can try.

Download: Hard-SPL-v9.zip

Re: Problems installing HardSPL

Oh, and extract the files from the zip file into their own folder on your desktop before running any Hard SPL or ROM upgrade.

Re: Problems installing HardSPL

well thanks for the advice. i extracted hardspl 9 to my desktop in its own folder and ran the exe. my phone prompted me to allow it twice then jumped into bootloader and i actually saw the progress bar pop up this time but then it just rebooted back to windows mobile and my pc gave me the following error:

ERROR [284] : UPDATE ERROR

The ROM Update Utility has encountered communication errors during the update process. The program will guide you step-by-step to recover from the errors so you can continue with the update.

It kind of seems like Vista is dropping my USB connections. Maybe an SD card method would work...Although the HERMIMG.nbh method didnt work.

Re: Problems installing HardSPL

When it flashes, it will go to 100% then your device will restart, the RUU will throw an error but just click the exit button, and all should be well.

Check the bootloader version now!
