Looking at TyTN II on Orange
Hi,
First post here!
I'm looking at getting the HTC TyTN II on Orange. The device will actually be my 3rd Windows Mobile device, but the last I owned is now 7 years old (I still have it, and still use it)!!!
I've started to use the data services on my current handset, but I'm not liking the excessive £3.50/Mb charges, hence looking at this with the unlimited data plan.
I've read plenty of reviews on the handset, and it seems to be considered the best PDA/phone on the market at present. I've read that Orange have removed the TouchFLO Home screen in favor of their effort. Can the original Home screen be restored in some way?
Is it possible to get iTunes music onto this device?
What kind of applications are available for it (commercial and free)?
Best regards,
TyTN-II.

Re: Looking at TyTN II on Orange
Hi & welcome to 4WM
The TyTnII is an excellent device and the Orange version as good as any other.
Beware Orange's data charges. They don't have an unlimited bundle apart from Evening and Weekend at £5 per month. Anytime access is £8pm for 30Mb. They also offer all users a cap of £1 per day which can be activated via your online account.
The TyTnII does not have the TouchFlo interface- this is for the newer Touch devices with flush screen. You can add the HTC Home screen in place of the Orange offering. You can also add TouchFlo function by installing the relevant programs, and there are now a number of 'interface managers' which even improve on TouchFlo.

Re: Looking at TyTN II on Orange
Hi Tytn-II and welcome to 4WinMobile
Cannot believe that tag hadn't already been picked ! Hope it is the device you actually get though.
I have a TyTn-II but mine is with T-Mobile on their web N walk which is almost all you can eat data for £7.50 - there are limits and specific restrictions. So if you can swap it may well be worth looking at that. Or even try talking to Orange and letting them know you are thinking of switching - they may offer a deal, its always worth a try.
As NeilM states all the operators do their own thing with the home screen but it is usually fairly simple to remove it and replace it with your style/programs.
Let us know what you get.

Re: Looking at TyTN II on Orange
Hi,
It seems the TyTN II will be the device, it's just which contract I can get it on (I'd love to be able to just buy the handset, but that isn't an option at the moment).
Thanks for the note about the data on Orange! This was why I was changing originally. I've just had a look at the package, and they only offer 3Mb, unless I go for their Panther 40 package with 250 Mb data option!
If I buy online it costs £35/mo, but if I go in-store, whilst the contract then costs £40/mo, the handset is free. There is only £20 in it though over the period (they give you £100 for your old phone, of which I have plenty!).
Do you know what T-Mobile are offering? Their site doesn't seem very clear.
Are there any other UK providers offering this handset on a tariff?

Try looking at O2 - they have the Stellar which is the same machine (and is unlocked). I believe they have some good deals on unlimited data.

Re: Looking at TyTN II on Orange
Another consideration, if quicker web use is what you're after, is to check out each providers 3g/hsdpa coverage and make sure the one you go with cover areas you spend most of your time.
Generally they have a map detailing coverage on their sites.
I use tmobile personally as i use the net a lot. If you call them they will offer you various prices depending on contract and can be open to a haggle from time to time.

Re: Looking at TyTN II on Orange
Hi,
O2 are more expensive than Orange and offer less data. Their consumer tariffs are no good either as they explicitly state "for non-commercial use" which suggests they monitor for this.
Thanks for the suggestion! Looks like Orange are it!

Re: Looking at TyTN II on Orange
looking at your figures T-Mobile comes in with
Flext 35 + web'n'walk (18 months) £180
Unlimited web surfing and e-mails
FREE weekend calls £42.50 £37.50 £69.99
This is for an online contract with £180 allowance, LOTS of data @ £37.50 pm. But the phone will cost you £70.
However, if you look at the Touch Plus its the same prices but the phone is free.
You need to select the phone you are looking at then at the top of the page hit the WebNWalk image to get the data charges included.

Re: Looking at TyTN II on Orange
Hi,
What is the TyTN II like for reception? I'm out in the sticks but on the edge of 3's 3G network (I can get a very good signal and 3G connection if I go outside).
EDIT: The coverage map is working. Can anyone on Orange confirm whether they get a better signal than the map might suggest? I know I'm on the edge of 3's 3G network (actually, outside of it) but I can still get a very good 3G signal. Is this the case with Orange?
Best regards,
TyTN-II.

Re: Looking at TyTN II on Orange
Find some mates on different networks, an unlocked phone, and a bottle of wine. Invite mates round to enjoy the wine, then persuade them to let you compare reception with the different SIMs in the same phone. This should tell you which networks are better where you live.
Sadly Windows Mobile phones reception is never quite as good as most bog standard phones. If you tell us where your version of out in the sticks is you just might find a member here prepared to test reception on a Windows Mobile device for you.
