Could anyone help me with my new orange Tytn II

Hi,

I received my Tytn II a few days ago but when I ordered it from orange I didn't realise that they would cripple the phone with their own software.

I have been reading quite a bit on how to customise the phone and this forum seemed to have a lot of posts so I thought I would join and ask for some advice.

I don't think I want to install a new rom as it will mess up the warranty/insurance and I would say there is a good chance of me dropping this before my contract is up. What I would like to do is install a one of these today plugins that would allow me to use the phone with my fingers rather than having to get out the stylus every time I want do do something.

I read this link: http://www.4winmobile.com/forums/pho...6-03-08-a.html (!!! 6 button HTC Home plugin + BRAND NEW version of customization pack 16/03/08 !!!)

But I don't quite understand which I should install. Do I need to install the customiser as well?

I was also hoping if someone could explain touchflow and cube, can these be installed on my orange rom? I don't have a memory card yet, will they work ok from the phone or should I wait?

My last questions are about SMS. I want to change the sound file used to alert me but orange seem to have locked the choices to the default sounds. I tried pasting a file into the windows directory on the phone but it seems to be locked.

Is there any way of having threaded sms view like the iphone has? so that a conversation can be followed?

Sorry for all the questions, I've never used a phone like this before and I'm a bit lost.

Many thanks.

I had the same queries on my first WM device (an M600), took a bit of tinkering to figure out (as I didn't know these forums existed).

The Orange Home Plug in is, frankly, a waste of space. Get rid of it by clicking Start > Settings > Personal Tab > Today > Items > Untick "Orange".

Download Boz's HTC Home plug in from the link you quoted, copy it to your phone's "My documents" folder, tap to install, go back to the above Today "area" and ensure that HTC Home is ticked - OK the changes and your home screen should change. One thing I'd recommend would be installing a black theme too (I use black wm6 theme freeware for Pocket PC windows mobile and wm5 or wm6 ppc, PocketPC free downloads.).

As for using alternative sound notifications - add them to the Windows Folder in wav format (well, that's what I do) and they *should* appear in the drop down list in Sounds and Notifications.

Re: Could anyone help me with my new orange Tytn II

Hi cheeseslice,

There's quite a few questions there for your first post!

If the phone has been crippled by Orange the only possible way without putting a new ROM on is to maybe do a hard reset and NOT allow the Orange customisations to run. It depends how Orange have applied the customisations. If they are hard-coded in ROM there's no solution but if they run afterwards then doing a soft reset before they run will kill them.

Only consider this route if you have all you device's content backed up onto a PC or Storage Card, preferably both, and you don't mind re-installing apps!

As to installing HTC's Home application, that should be perfectly possible if the hard reset has disabled the Orange lock. Same with Cube....

The SMS sound issue may also be cured if the above route allows customisations....

As to threaded SMS, I think there may be a few third party apps that could do it but it's available in Windows Mobile 6.1 if that get's released for your device. Personally I'm not a big fan of threaded SMS....

Hope that helps

Re: Could anyone help me with my new orange Tytn II

I just wanted to thank you for the replies. I think I'm finally making some progress with things.

One thing I find quite annoying though is the screen locking. after about 30 secs the screen turns off, I have to push the power button to activate it again. I don't suppose there is any way of having the phone just keylock ?

You can set the screen to be permenantly on, but it'll vastly reduce your battery life. Setting is available in Start > Settings > System > Backlight > Battery Power.

Re: Could anyone help me with my new orange Tytn II

There are some choices for locking keys in Start > Settings > System > Key Lock which may be of use.

When you say the screen locks, do you mean it dims so you have to tap it again to activate, or do you mean it really locks as in blacks out and does not respond at all? If the latter, then you probably have the power time out set too short. In Start > Settings > System > Power select the Advanced tab. There are two timeouts, one for battery power, one for external. I find setting my battery power timeout to switch the device off after 2 minutes is a reasonable compromise between convenience so it doesn't turn off while I'm using it, and preserving battery.

There are 4 timeouts you need to look at, 2 in backlight and 2 in power, for battery and external power. To avoid problems then set them in this order, shortest first, and make sure no two are the same time:
Battery backlight off
Battery power off
External backlight off
External power off
It may be that this advice is over cautious, since the problems arising from setting these to the same time or in a different order were a long time ago, but following that order won't cause you any inconvenience.

Re: Could anyone help me with my new orange Tytn II

The screen was actually going black but I did what you said and it's working fine now. I had it set to shut off too quickly.

I don't suppose any of you could help me with another problem. I set up google mail to work using imap. Everything was working fine but last night when I hit send/receive all of my messages disappeared, I have checked with my outlook on the laptop and it is still working fine with google so it has to be something on the Tytn II.

Is there a setting somewhere to delete messages that are older than a specified age? It's the only explanation I can come up with for them being deleted.

Re: Could anyone help me with my new orange Tytn II

  1. Since you are also synching with Outlook on the laptop, do you have it set to leave messages on the server? If not, once the laptop pulls the messages, they are no longer available through any other means...
  2. Second question, have you checked google.com to confirm the messages are still available on the web.?
  3. Accessing the mail options on your device, you can walk through the setup for the account, from there you can change the number of days that your device will download messages
Hope this helps, post back if you still have issues...

Re: Could anyone help me with my new orange Tytn II

I got it sorted, I went through the setup of the account again to check the settings and saw that it was set to only show the last 3 days messages. I have now changed this to keep them all.

I seem to have a question every time I reply!

With this phone I have got a 250mb data package, I have never used this type of phone before and I was wondering would 250mb be enough. I'm just talking about checking email, websites, google maps, I'm not going to be watching youtube or anything like that.

The reason I ask is that mostly I'll be using this in the evenings and at weekends, Orange have a deal for £5 a month they offer unlimited weekend data so it might be worth my while to get that on top of my data bundle. Suppose I'll know by the end of the month anyway!

Thanks again for the help

Re: Could anyone help me with my new orange Tytn II

I forgot to ask something else.

I moved my ringtone into the windows/rings folder, it is an mp3. But it seems to ring quite slowly. Would I be best to convert this to wma?
