Can't sync or view/send messages

Hello, I hope someone can help with my sync and messaging problems. I've had an O2 XDA Stellar for a month, which has synced fine with Vista on my Vaio 'til this p.m. I synced at 12pm (adding lots of Outlook messages) & could read them on the train into town, then on the way home 6 hrs later, I couldn't open any Messaging (Outlook or Virgin) to view or send--not via Today, via Programs, via contacts.

Then tried to sync with laptop, where Windows Mobile Device Centre originally appeared normal (ie showing Sync Settings, Files, etc), ActiveSync wouldn't work--kept getting an error, on phone is support code O280004005. Then stopped showing anything, even a connection (though I'd hear the 'new device (dis)connected' sounds & Photoshop tries to download photos from it). Have rebooted laptop, deleted lots from phone and shifted bigger files to existing 8GB storage card, done soft reset of phone, unticked 'enable advanced network functionality'...don't want to do hard reset as haven't yet backed up; that was tomorrow's project. Any ideas would be truly appreciated. Thank you.

Re: Can't sync or view/send messages

Is that the exact correct error code as it does not match anything in my library of error codes?

Re: Can't sync or view/send messages

Oops. Well spotted and thanks for replying. It was 0x80004005 (guess I had O2 vs 0x on the brain as that's my network). I've also tried deleting several files that I assume to be the e-mail messages (in File Explorer/Messaging on the phone) in case it was overwhelmed with so many (217 in Outlook according to the today screen), but that has no effect, and there's loads of free memory on the phone and card. I'm naively stabbing in the dark out of desperation. Thank you for any suggestions!

Not a problem, does this relate or help at all:

Re: Can't sync or view/send messages

Unfortunately from memory 0x80004005 is a standard nonspecific error code for just about everything, which obvously is not much help.

I had a similar occurrence a year ago and in the end it was my PC that was the issue and a problem with my offline cache (I use Exchange server as a backend).

AS a last resort if no-one else comes up with anything else you could try the following:

1. From the tools / Account options you need to get to your profile settings/offline settings and compact the offline folder as this will reindex the file.

2. Failing that archive everything in Outlook to a new data file (pst) by telling it to archive everything older than a date 2 years in the future. Then rebuild your email profile using the new pst file.

3. Hard reset your phone.

In all events I would ensure that you backup your Outlook data before doing anything in case when you do "fix" the issue it does not synch from your phone and delete the data in Outlook,
good luck

These ActiveSync error codes can be notoriously difficult to nail down. First things first I suggest deleting your partnership, soft reset device, reboot PC, and see if that helps.

Re: Can't sync or view/send messages

No, thank you for suggesting it, but that problem seems quite different from mine. The Today screen and 'Messaging' usually leads to two things: Outlook, which shows messages I copied onto the phone from my laptop inbox (just for reading; any drafted replies are sent by the laptop after the next sync) and Virgin, which shows newly arrived messages and allows me to send outgoing ones using my ISP. These disappear from the phone once I download them onto my PC using Outlook in the normal send/receive mail way. Since this problem, Virgin hasn't appeared on the phone--not on Today (where Outlook still appears, saying I have 217 messages synced from the laptop) and no new message alerts. But nor can I open Outlook to view the stored laptop messages or send email. The whole reason I got the phone was to access/send e-mail, so I'm hugely frustrated.

Re: Can't sync or view/send messages

Can you try manually opening the Messaging program?

Open File Explorer on the device, and make sure in Settings that 'Show All Files' is ticked.

Now go to My Device/Windows and look for a file called tmail.exe (or justtmail in File Explorer); tap this file name with the stylus/finger and see if the program opens; if so, see if you can switch accouts with the direction pad L or R presses.

"But nor can I open Outlook to view the stored laptop messages or send email."

Is this Outlook on your PC - in which case you def have a problem with your PC's files. Create a new profile and test - you can always either revert back to the original profile or import the old data using the original PST file.

Re: Can't sync or view/send messages

Thanks for the suggestion, Neil. I have two tmail files (with no extension showing), one newer and larger (396kb), the other smaller (11b) and neither reacts when I try to open them. There's also tmail.manifest which just seems to be code, and tmailutl, which needs to open in a programme.

Do you think it's looking like a dreaded hard reset is going to be my only option to solve both problems? And even then, I wonder how to avoid it happening again. Thank you.
