Charging the TYTN II

The wall charger that came with TYTN II is a hefty beast, with an output at 5V of 2 AMPS - four times what comes out of a normal USB socket.

I discovered this when I used other chargers with the phone. I have a number of 5V usb chargers that I carry when travelling, they all charged the phone, but at a rate not able to keep up with discharge during use. When charging in the car I found the phone went flat even when plugged into a charge cord.

So, I bought the genuine HTC car charge lead, which also had a 2A output - problem solved.

BUT

Since I upgraded to wm6.1 I have discovered that ONLY an HTC charger or a USB lead plugged into a PC USB port will charge the phone. Other 5V sources, which previously used to at least trickle charge the battery have no effect at all. Obviously something has been switched to look at which pins are connected on the USB - but now half the chargers in the house dont work on the phone.

ON THE PLUS SIDE

Since the wm6.1 upgrade the battery seems to last half as long again.

Anyone had experience of this?

Re: Charging the TYTN II

Hmm odd, I havnt noticed any problem charging my phone on a random USB lead since installing 6.1, but yes i do agree that 6.1 has improved the battery life quite a lot!

Re: Charging the TYTN II

I'm particularly concerned because I have just bought this:

Car FM Transmitter Handsfree for HTC TyTN II 2 P4550 - eBay, Car Accessories, PDA Accessories, Computers. (end time 25-Jun-08 13:46:49 AEST)

The transmitter works find, but it won't charge the phone at the same time.

Tracking down the manufacturers website indicates that it SHOULD be charging however. Normally I would suspect a faulty device, but this glitch with some chargers hints that the problem is with the phone.

It's a bugger though, I finally thought I'd solved the FM transmitter/charging issue....

Re: Charging the TYTN II

We've got several HTC Tytn II's here and all of them have an output of 5V - 1A. None of them have 2A. I've never seen a device charger with 2A. Are you sure you have your figures right? The input is 0.2A, you're not getting confused with this are you?

Re: Charging the TYTN II

Ulp... you're right... it's 1 amp (where did I get 2A from?).

But the problem remains, the phone will charge from a usb socket, but not from a generic 500mA usb charger.... and it did before the 6.1 upgrade...

Re: Charging the TYTN II

Hmmm..... I'm surprised the 500mA charger worked at all to be honest. I've had limited success with a 750mA charger but never with a 500mA since my o2 XDA Mini. I've had issues with chargers when the charging light comes on but no charge has come through. If I were you I'd look at getting a 1A charger, as the devices are only getting more power hungry so sooner or later you'll need to upgrade.
