Best Battery – V6.1, 3G, HSDPA???
Hi all,
Just received my brand new HTC TYTN, and loving it. But, I am confused on the best way to get the max from the battery.
I am in the UK on Orange, and have been reading posts where people say that V6.1 saves battery (a little), and turning off HSDPA also saves power, but are there any figures, stats or experience from anybody.
What sort of saving are we looking at with the V6.1 loads (I am cautious to load a new ROM unless there is a massive difference in terms of functionality, speed and/or battery life)? Is there ay noticeable saving in battery by turning off HSDPA (compared to the potential slower data speeds)?
Any experience of the above would be useful information.
Regards
Jaffa

Re: Best Battery – V6.1, 3G, HSDPA???
A lot of people have said 6.1 has better memory management, personally if there has been better memory usage from 6.1 I've found it's negligable. Turning off HSDPA will give you some battery benefits but again not much. The real battery saver is by only enabling GPRS. That is turning of HSDPA and 3G. I've found this can save increase battery life upto about 50% more. For me it will enable me to charge the device every other day as opposed to every day.

Re: Best Battery – V6.1, 3G, HSDPA???
I agree- no advantage in 6.1 over 6.0, and little in stopping HSDPA (which is only active while data is actually being transferred) but 30-40% improvement in turning 3G off.
3G/HSDPA is only really relevant when exchanging large amounts of data; for email, Instant Messaging and light web surfing, GSM is perfectly adequate.

Re: Best Battery – V6.1, 3G, HSDPA???
Thanks for the information. I might try out BandSwitch which I found, which allows switching between 3G and 2G. Most of the time, I am using it for push email and stuff, so will see how I get on with 2G, and use Bandswitch to change to 3G when needed (unless there is a setting to turn 3G on and off, but I cant see this on the phone as standard).

On that note, what version of Bandswitch are people using at the moment? I'd like to get it back on my devices again!

Re: Best Battery – V6.1, 3G, HSDPA???
The last version I used was v1.2.3, the later versions are now paid for apps. Not required now that I have a decent data package.

Re: Best Battery – V6.1, 3G, HSDPA???
Bandswitch 1.23 (I think!) is still the easiest and free, but some problems with some WM6 ROMs.
To simply do it on the standard phone, go Phone/Menu/Options, then the Band tab. Change the upper box to GSM from Auto, then back again to restore 3G.

Re: Best Battery – V6.1, 3G, HSDPA???
Interestingly the band section in the Toshiba G910 is greyed out so an application like bandswitch is a must.
