Re: Give us your feedback on the new Polaris variants the HTC Touch Cruise and O2 Orb

My first Orbit 2 is being replaced as it will not recognise SIMs after just 24 hours of performing perfectly . But O2 are great and replacing with a next day delivery.

However, the good stuff - it is everything I expected and more. GPS superb, wifi has good reception, GPRS great. phone a bit fiddly for a newcomer to touch screens, but that's me and I'll get used to it. Installed Skype Mobile and it works really well. Screen is wonderful, vibrant and clear.

slight moans - shiny reflective screen is hard to see in daylight, but just needs a bit of shade to remedy that. I'm using battery power at an alarming rate...I need some better way to shut down apps, not just minimise them.

Good that O2 are playing the game!

Running apps don't have much impact on battery power- they will only be using the power to maintain the RAM usage, which is minimal.

Shutting down apps however will prevent the device slowing down as apps start hogging the memory- HTC TAsk Manager is good at this as a free app (is it part of O2's build?) but there are myriad others out there, both free and paid for.

The biggest single thing you can do to prevent battery drain is to keep the phone on GSM, rather than 3G, only switching to 3G as you need for big downloads. Also be careful with the use of WiFi, which also eats the battery. GPS is much less power hungry, but should be off if not being used. GPS will turn off when any app which uses it ceases to call on the COM port.so don't keep GPS apps open in the background. Most of them do have an Exit command for this reason.

Cheers Neilm,

Yes, I think it's a combination of GPRS and WiFi, along with my utter addiction to playing with every option which has contributed to this. I'll check out the HTC app when my replacement arrives today. I don't think this is part of the O2 build.

Your Orbit 2 will have O2 Plus if you let the customisations run after the first boot up. O2 Plus has a task manager that will really close items.

Tip: Have a look on these forums for the download of a later O2 Plus version. To use it you must NOT allow the normal customisations to run, so do a soft reset in those 3 seconds.
