wi fi connection - home network
I've got past 'available' to 'connected' for my home wi fi network.
My computer shows xda-orbit-2 as a connected device.
To test its data transfer capability I've been trying to connect to the internet on my Orbit 2, but it always times out. The connection to the Orbit (displayed on my PC) always seems to drop shortly after it has connected..
Also my WEP code seems to disappear (and has to be re-entered) on subsequent power on/off.
Connections to the internet work fine over the O2 mobile network.
Any suggestions as to what I'm missing?
Cheers
Dave

Re: wi fi connection - home network
Are you sure the WEP code is exactly correct- it sounds as if the code may be wrong which is why yu can't exchange data, and the key isn't remembered.
WM devices can't use 'passphrases' in WEP so you must enter the WEP key in its full hexadecimal glory!
Which WEP are you using- 64 or 128bit? 128 bit needs a 26 character hex string. Any reason why you aren't using the much more secure, and easier to configure WPA-PSK?

I can confirm this as when I set up my Orbit for Wi-Fi, I was trying the passphrase with no luck. It was only when I tried the actual WEP key that it started to work.
Have you tried connecting to any other (open) Wi-Fi networks? Does it work?

Re: wi fi connection - home network
Thanks guys...
I'm using a BT badged 2WIRE308 wireless router (with WEP 64 bit encryption).
I've used the supplied 10 digit security key (is this not understood by WM?).
A laptop I have works fine on the network.
Where would I find the full hexadecimal key - it's not visible in any of the router set-up browser pages.
Are there other settings on the Orbit I should be aware of in regard to setting up wireless which I may have been overlooking?

Re: wi fi connection - home network
OK- 10 characters is the correct number for 64bit WEP, so that ought to be the correct string!
You may need to select the correct 'Index' from 1-4. 128bit WEP uses only Index1 so is irrelevant, but 64 bit need the correct Index setting. May be a case of trial and error- hopefully the WiFi settings on the Orbit will allow the index to be selected (just checked mine, and there is a choice!)

Either try index 1 to see if that works, if not try 2 and so on upto 4.
Alternatively, check the wireless settings on your laptop to see which index is being used.

Re: wi fi connection - home network
It connects fine on index 1.
Seems to need a certificate to enable data transfer.
Where to look?

You shouldn't need any cetificates for data transfer. Although it may appear to connect on Index 1, that doesnt mean it is the correct one. Have you tried the others?
Is there anything in the BT Router stopping connections? Some of these 'old technology' roiuters have some strange config issues!

Re: wi fi connection - home network
Try changing the channel number to 10 or 11 this fixed a nuber of connection issues I had on my BT HomeHub, some devices were fine others were pants or would not connect, all good now though. Oh and of course try giving the router a reboot which I am sure you have but that often fixes odd things like this
