Re: Software preferences for Orbit 2
PocketPlus and Mobile Shell do have some features in common, but they don't clash with each other.
Shell shows a 'friendly' user front end with access to programs, contacts etc. Plus is a much more comprehensive task manager with the ability to define a home screen tabbed interface that can include most of your existing today plugins within its tabs. It also has shell extensions for zip files, multiple Internet Explorer windows and an excellent 'Safe Mode' feature.
I have both programs, but curently only use PocketPlus- I found the pretty interface of Shell to be superfluous given the flexibility of Plus, but other have the opposite opinion
Both are available as trial versions.

Yep, I'm the other way around. I really like the extra visuals Mobile Shell adds but don't have any need for the extra functionality of Pocket Plus. It's horses for courses.

Re: Software preferences for Orbit 2
Oooo I've had a giggle with this. I'm always convinced I'm the last one to join the party, just other's are leaving but, here goes...
A free FTP program. I can sit at my desk, or have the phone in another room and FTP in to my phone...
I might even give it a go with some of you lot.. Just trying to get hold of a pic of cyclist's bike.. (I picture it with a little revolving sat dish on top and lots of bleepy screens.. lol)
Here goes, it's now freeware and you can view files, without having to drag them back down via ActiveSyn or transferring them... Not a must have, but having my boss put some files on my phone from his desk, via a web browser, did cause a couple of WTF comments.
mochasoft.dk and it's the freeware FTP....
Me bonkers, or anybody else find it useful?

Maybe I have the wrong idea but are they not both Today screen replacements? If so, which one has priority. If not, does the Pocket Plus scren boot up first and then you have to select the shell afterwards?

Re: Software preferences for Orbit 2
Had mine for a month or so now. Been a Palm user for years so I'm pretty used to replacing the bog standard apps you get with devices.
Far and the best thing I found [on this site, I think] is FFF: Finger Friendly Friends. I have 600+ contacts and this is the speediest and most comprehensive CM out there and it's totally accurate with or without a stylus. Mapped to a hard key it is a total replacement for the inbuilt dialler as well.
As a shell I have PointUI and I really like it- but it needs some tweaks. I'm trying SpB Diary as a new diary/Today screen and it's growing on me.
I did try Opera for the web but I'm not prepared to pay for it so I'm sticking with IE until Firefox Mobile comes out. [any news on that?]
tMan is pretty nifty if you want to manage your open apps. I find it weird there isn't a task bar on this OS, it seems a really obvious necessity.
Still haven't found a calendar I'm happy with though. I find Outlook impossible to use effectively, it's so rigid. SpB Diary still maps to it for detailed viewing so I really need a better one. Any ideas anyone ? [F/W preferably but I guess it is important enough to shell out for...]

Re: Software preferences for Orbit 2
O2 Plus which came on your Orbit has a task manager. If that one doesn't suit there are lots more free and paid for, so tell us what you need from it.
For a calendar app, are you talking about what goes on the Today screen, or the full calendar when you open it? I use TodayAgenda for the Today screen (donationware) and Pocket Informant for the full app (paid for).

Re: Software preferences for Orbit 2
This may be a really stupid question, but does anybody know how I'd go about removing preinstalled programs, from the Orbit..
I'm thinking of the pointless "Streaming Media" application and the Games. Neither of which I use....
I'm finding a distinct Northern bias on this forum... Not a criticism... I'm from Manc mesen... originally...
Plus we all seem to know the Lowry very well... Had dinner there over Easter and saw Ronaldo and his family havin a munch.... Hideous tracksuit on, mind you I'm not havin the last laugh, for neither the Ferrari, nor the Lambo in the car back were mine. That much I do know!

Re: Software preferences for Orbit 2
The short answer to removing preinstalled programs is you don't because you can't
The somewhat longer and more useful answer is that there are two things you can do:
1) Delete the shortcuts from Windows/Start Menu/Programs so that these items don't show up in menus any more, or create a subfolder for them, something like Windows/Start Menu/Programs/Unused
2) Find a cooked ROM without the items you don't use and flash that. So far as I know there aren't any Orbit 2 cooked ROMs around yet anyway, so this would have to be a longer term strategy, and it would invalidate your warranty.
I was at the Lowry on Sunday to see I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue. Cycled there in sunshine, and cycled back home a lot faster in the horizontal sleet! We went mooching around the outlet shops before the performance and found that the M+S outlet there has some very nice Autograph suits in dark grey at £100 off, so that kept DH happy.

Re: Software preferences for Orbit 2
There are cooked roms out there for the Polaris that run just as well on the Orbit 2, I have tried them and soon went back to the original and had my device back to how it was in 10 minutes thanks to Sprite backup, and in all honesty I prefer the original O2 rom as there isn't much to fault about it, and it can be customised to your own taste anyway.

Re: Software preferences for Orbit 2
I found the O2 Orbit 2 ROM to be a pretty decent launch ROM. No noticeable issues for me (although I obviously didn't bother installing the O2 customisations).
