Help! Can't connect to O2 Mobile Network

Hi All,

Had my Orbit 2 for several weeks now with no problems. Travel away from the UK a lot and just returned from LA this morning. When I got back to to the UK, turned my phone on as normal but it would not connect to the O2 phone network. It just says 'no service'. I tried everythng including doing a manual search for networks but no luck. I thought it was a hardware problem and the phone was faulty. However tried a Vodafone pay as you go sim card and it worked fine. Have also done several soft resets and as a last resort, performed a Hard Reset back to factory defaults - no luck, still won't connect. The signal strength meter just shows a ! beside it and under phone settings it says 'no service'.

Please can anyone help with this?

Re: Help! Can't connect to O2 Mobile Network

It maybe that the service is down or a problem with your sim, did you always get a decent signal? I do know that O2 are upgrading their service at the moment to get everyone up to full HSDPA speeds, it may be worth ringing them and asking. If that isn't the answer ask them to send you out another sim (free of charge of course!) as it may have been damaged in some way?

Re: Help! Can't connect to O2 Mobile Network

The sim works in my wife's phone no problem. However she is also with O2 and her sim is not working in the orbit either. The vodafone sim works fine though! I'm stumped on this one.

Is it at all possible that O2 can disable the phone itself so it won't work on their network?

I would give O2 a call on this one because a hard reset should have sorted it, it all points to a faulty device, and I doubt if it has been blocked.

Re: Help! Can't connect to O2 Mobile Network

Thanks. Have contacted O2 and they believe it's a faulty unit. Returning it for a replacement. It's such a weird fault though as everything else on the unit works fine.

Thanks for the quick reply.

It was a strange coincidence though that it stopped working as soon as you got back from the States!

Re: Help! Can't connect to O2 Mobile Network

We've seen the same thing reported with the HTC TytnII and T-Mobile- for some reason the phone gets locked onto the 'Roaming' network while you are abroad, and the phone erroneously reports itself as on that network when you return home.

Hard resets and soft resets don't seem to fix it, so it would appear to be a combined phone and network error.

[Edit- topic was on another forum, and didn't seem to be resolved! My comment in the thread referenced an earlier instance, which may have been resolved with a Radio ROM reflash ]

Re: Help! Can't connect to O2 Mobile Network

I had a similar thing a few weeks ago after the battery ran very low. It just couldn't find a network. Thankfully, after a full recharge and a couple of soft resets, a manual switch to a foreign network (O2 Eire) and then back to my local network seemed to fix it.

Re: Help! Can't connect to O2 Mobile Network

When you say the Voda p&g SIM worked - do you mean you could actually make/receive calls on it, or just that it picked up the network?

Vodafone and O2 implement IMEI bars in a slightly different way. Voda will allow you to pick up the network, but you won't be able to make/receive calls. O2 won't allow you to pick up a network at all.

The symptoms do sound like an IMEI bar, unless you could actually make or receive a call with the Voda SIM. In which case it must be faulty.

Do you have any more info on the upgrades? I've been having terrible O2 service issues since the middle of last week.
