Windows Mobile 6.1 HTC Touch Cruise

Now I might be being a complete idiot but after 45 minutes of confused browsing it appears that Windows Mobile 6.1 has been "released" in true MS fasion - where on the earth do I download the update??? If I can at all...?

Windows Mobile 6.1 has been released by Microsoft. But to get it for you device it is up to your provider if they have it ready for release to you.

Example, if you use O2, try the O2 website for the O2 Orbit II new ROM, or HTC website if you purchased the HTC Touch Cruise.

... that is, if they are available.

There are no official 6.1 upgrades yet available for the Touch Cruise or Orbit 2 but they shouldn't be far off!

Yup i have just checked on the o2 xda microsite and no updates so far.....hopefully comming soon when i am off for three weeks!!

As Firstbuddha has alluded to, MS don't actually sell Windows Mobile to end users - they sell licences to device manufacturers (or operators such as O2, Vodafone etc.) for use in their portfolio of devices.

Once an update is made available by MS, the manufacturers then build test ROMs for their devices and release to testers. Once any bugs are ironed out they release it to the public. That's why there is a lag in MS saying it's released and you being able to get it on your device!

However not all manufacturers will licence it for all their devices, they may choose to do some and not others etc. Its all a bit hit and miss....

Older devices tend to fare badly in this area with manufacturers/operators not deeming it worth their while and it reduces sales as it extends the life of older devices....

So now you know - even though it wasn't what you wanted to hear!

Apparently HTC are about to release a 6.1 Kaiser ROM... See this post over at Modaco...

So, Kaiser/Stellar owners will be happy!!

Is the Touch Cruise recent enough for HTC to release 6.1 for it? I bought from expansys.com - does that mean HTC will be the providers of the update or who?

Yes I should think HTC will bring out a 6.1 rom for the Touch Cruise, but when is a different matter, I am sorry to say they are annoyingly slow at releasing rom updates!
