Question: gmail problems . . .

I don't know if it is a setting that I haven't found but gmail seems to only keep new emails in the polaris inbox until the next auto retrieval - currently every 5 mins then it deletes them from the inbox whether or not I have read them. I then have to go online to check my emails which is frustrating.
Have I done something wrong when setting up email?
Any advice gratefully received!

This used to be an issue with GMail IMAP and was happening to me some time ago, if you disable IMAP within GMail and reenable it and see if that makes any difference.

this happened with the initial setup of gmail... way back when, you had to set it up using a particular syntax to get to see all of your email, but that has since changed... which protocol are you using to retrieve your mail... IMAP or POP?

I also know that gmail had issues a few days ago... on the server side, but have since fixed them... is this a new problem that just developed or from a new configuration...?
