email connections wi-fi/dialled
Hi guys,
I've got an Orbit 2, via O2 with a data plan, which connects every 60 minutes to check for emails & works well. My question is when I go abroad I won't want to be checking for emails every 60 minutes as overseas connections are outside of my 'inclusive time' & data plan. I presume this would be the time to connect via a free wi-fi, if there's one around. So, when I hit the Send/Receive button in email, how can I be sure it will not try to dial up a connection?
Any ideas anyone?
Mitch

Re: email connections wi-fi/dialled
If you're connected to WiFi at the time, it will use WiFi in preference to a cellular connection. One way to test might be to force an update on the QuickGPS app. That only downloads a small amount of data so shouldn't cost you too much if it does try to open up a 3G connection. In anycase, you can usually catch it and stop it before it connects.

Re: email connections wi-fi/dialled
WM6 is actually quite clever here
In the ActiveSync/Schedule menu is a checkbox for 'Use above settings while roaming' which is off by default.
This means that if you try to open a data session while abroad, you will get a dialogue box saying 'Data charges may be more expensive while roaming. Do you want to continue Yes/No' so you should always be in control.
I can attest that this works well, having just returned from a european holiday

I wasn't aware of that one, thanks Neilm. With it being an ActiveSynch setting, will it only apply to Exchange mail or will that work with pop boxs etc as well?

I hadn't noticed that one either - I will be running a few tests before I go away this year after last years £580 bill.

I suspect it's the whole data shebang, because I got the warning whether I tried to sync Email, Send a new Email or use a Browser.
Mailman- yes, worth a try! Make sure the 'Roaming' box remains unticked
I think this is a WM6 thing, as it didn't happen with WM5 last year. May even be WM6.1, as I'm using a cooked 6.1 ROM on the Ameo.
