Battery life

As an excercise today I decided to leave the Shift at home, completely powered down on the desk and see if any power drained during the day. This meant it was on the desk from 6:30am until 4:42pm.

During that time the battery life dropped from 100% down to 86% - pretty scary for a completely turned off machine.

It took about 43 minutes fore the charge to get back to 100% with the machine turned on and booted.

Having never owned or used a laptop though I can't say if this is typical of such machines.

Re: Battery life

I wouldn't worry too much, don't forget the device is new and may take a few charges to get the max from the battery.

Re: Battery life

I wouldn't worry, it's not unusual for it to drain a bit while not in use, and although it's quite a lot, like Boz says the battery is probably still sorting itself out. Remember it's a laptop battery not a phone battery.

Re: Battery life

Fair enough I'll stop worrying then, I'm just used to phone batteries retaining the charge for days if not powered.

So this is typical laptop behavior then?

Re: Battery life

Hey all, new here.

The power drain is normal.

You can shut down Vista, SnapVUE is always on and is responsible for the power drain. I was looking at getting one until I found out it wasn't phone capable

Re: Battery life

Lithium-ion batteries are easily damaged so usually have single chip safety circuits built into multi-cell batteriy packs which monitor for and control excessive charge, discharge and excessive heat.

These monitoring circuits continuously draw a tiny amount of charge from the battery even if its doing nothing.

In addition, Li-on batteries suffer a slight ongoing ageing process from the moment they are built, regardless of how much use they are put to, and can loose up to 20% of their capacity each year, depending on how they are stored and used. They rarely last more than 2-3 years.

So a small daily discharge, even when switched off, is not at all unusual.

Re: Battery life

Disappointing it was but I'm still enjoying the machine. Great to take into work and have full control out my Outlook messages and tasks. (Mike you can imgine how that annoys certain people).
