"It may cost you data connection fee to download new database"

When I am trying to connect to a wireless network, I get the message

New Connection Setup database found. Do you want to install it?

(Note: It may cost you data connection fee to download new database)

What does this mean?

I am not sure what it means so I normally just click on "No"

Re: "It may cost you data connection fee to download new database"

I've never seen that one before

It could be that the device looks for updated system utilities- the Connection Setup database holds the information for setting all the Email/MMS/SMS and Mobile Web details for the various mobile operators.

If you are connected via WiFi, you won't be charged for this data, but if you are connecting via GPRS there will be data costs involved in the download, which is what the message warns about. This is a small datafile though, so even if you were downloading via GPRS the cost would be minimal.

To be sure, turn off the Phone Radio and turn on WiFi before proceeding, then say 'Yes' to the download.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Since I am in the USA and this phone is not made to be used here, I am just a little cautious on using this phone.

I got this yesterday for this first time too. Wasn't able to get it in tho cos I kept losing the connection halfway through. Finally tho it got the whole thing down and I don't know exactly what speed it was doing but it took a couple of minutes to complete. Haven't seen anything different on the phone, but I suspect these are new settings for email- and telecom providers. Might come in handy in the future...?

I'm glad it's not only me then.

I haven't been able to complete the download and it's extremely slow stopping at around 70%. I suppose if it's something from T-Mobile to lots of users all at once it will be.

I'll take the dog for a walk and see whether I get a better signal from T-Mobile as it's poor in my house.

I'll keep trying.

Are you from the USA?

Unfortunately no. Are you T-Mobile? I speculate whether it's some sort of upgreade to their system. I know nothing, I just speculate as I get the message with wireless turned off and on 'data' through my service provider.

What do you mean when you say "Unfortunately no." I thought that you are living in the U.S. from my other post.

Anyway, yeah, I also have T-mobile service and I am from San Diego, CA. I wish this phone has 3G service with T-mobile. Such an expensive phone and I am not using it to its full potential.

I mean that I wish I were living in the USA (it's an ambition of mine). I live in the UK.
I ponder whether Tizzy is with T-Mobile as he's the only other poster who has had this message I think. I didn't think it could be a local Wi-Fi problem as mine is turned off on the phone and if it did concern Wi_Fi it'd be unlike to incur charges and how/why would they be contacting you or I in this manner. Got to 99% last night before it gave up again.

I am on Tmobile and I have been getting this download for the past 2-3 days. So far it hasn't got beyond 60% and that is in a "H" area.
