Smile Re: WLM problems?

Well, it arrived (at 7.30am) or stupid o'clock as my kids would call it.

Wow.

A really delightful device. I'm keeping this one. It made me laugh out loud how tiny it is compared to the Hermes.

I was prepared for it to seem slower, but probably due to WM6 it isn't most of the time. The only time I notice it a little is downloading stuff via gprs.

A few small hiccups at the beginning when it wouldn't download weather either via gprs or activesync pass thru. But I left that, came back to it and it sync'd weather OK both ways.

Another small problem when trying to get WLM going the first time, the device froze. Soft reset (the only forced one today!) and that went OK. No problems to speak of with that, a few duplicate contacts, but nothing unexpected. My messenger contacts appeared on & offline as they were, so will keep an eye on that one. Hotmail sync was a breeze, and how nice to see html mail.

After soft reset during installation of a program, the device seemed to be 'roaming'. Checked the networks and they were all ticked! Unticked all but T-mob UK and reset and all seems OK now.

Wifi was a snap, easiest set up I ever had, and a good strong signal too.
Phone seems great re volume etc. Kept asking people if they could hear me OK, they probably think I'm barmy, but they all could.

Other email setup was totally pain free, they even included the 'recent' thingy on gmail!

Only slight hitch at the moment is that when I soft reset it loses my sms messages, but I remember my Vario doing that in the beginning too, so hopefully that will settle down.

I've tried to be really strict about not installing too much at the beginning, see how it goes. There's so much included with the phone, that you don't need an awful lot.

So far have just installed, Dictionary manager, Gprs monitor, Live Search, Memmaid (the new version, really recommend this for the Touch as the Compact Ram, and Reclaim Ram work very well), Mobipocket reader, Newsbreak, Spb Diary, Spb backup, Spb Finance, and last mentioned, but first installed, phonepad.

I'm really pleased with this phone. Better than advertised I reckon.

I don't notice it being slow. I used to keep the Vario on GSM anyway as 3G used up the battery so fast. Battery life is amazing. Text entry not a problem using phonepad AND it fits into even a tiny handbag AND I don't feel embarassed using it as a phone.

So, thanks for the encouragement & help everyone.

Re: WLM problems?

Can confirm that there is a problem with this version of Windows Live Mobile Client.

When you first set up the account, everything works fine.
Later on, you can still send&receive hotmail, messenger still works, but the sync function stops at the personal settings stage.

Googled around and someone said that if you remove your personal picture from messenger (on the pc) then re-set up the account, everything works again.

Tried this and it seemed to work for a while, but then, out of the blue, it stopped syncing again on personal settings. (I tried every kind of connection all the same problem).

The only way to get it working again is to use the sign in as another user function where it removes all the live stuff, sign in again immediately as yourself, and it sets everything up again and it all works - for a while.

I have a live support ticket out on this (not holding my breath here) and will put their reply on here.

Re: WLM problems?

Well, I can repeat the problem 100%.

Set up WLM all OK, then you can do whatever you like (use Wifi, use Memmaid Quick clean, etc etc.) as long as you don't soft reset (in any way, using software, the off button or the reset slot).

On each soft reset the sync fails at Personal settings (despite having removed the picture via the PC etc etc).

The only way to get a full sync back is to use the sign in as another user option and then just sign in again as yourself.

At first the Microsoft help team were very helpful, saying they'd had a number of people reporting this problem. Unfortunately they then passed me on to the Windows Live Mobile Product Specialist Team who replied:

"In response to your concern, since Windows Mobile 6 is newly released operating system for mobile, and only provided by limited carriers, the technical support for this devices could be best handled by your carrier on which is T-Mobile UK."

I did write back around 3 days ago to explain that this was an HTC branded device, not T-Mobile and that here in the UK we can buy any device as I did, and then buy seperately the SIM card/calls/sms/dataplan etc, and that T-Mobile would not be at all interested in my problem as I did not purchase the device from them. In fact they are bringing out their own version which may have a different version of WLM on it.

No reply to this at all.

It's a bit like telling someone who has a problem with Word on their PC to go and ask their Broadband provider for help!

I could ask HTC, but I reckon they are just going to tell me this is a Microsoft problem, they just supply the O/S with Windows products on there.

Anyway, it's working after a fashion. My emails get sync'd, I can see accurately if my contacts are online etc. The only thing missing is that contacts won't sync after the original sync unless I set it up again. Not such a bad thing!

I can only think that during the soft reset process, something is wiped out which is relevant to the Personal settings feature.

Oh well, said I wasn't holding my breath.

Re: WLM problems?

All I can say is that MS are aware of the issue and are working towards fixing this and other issues.

Re: WLM problems?

Thank you for that, it's comforting to know that the problem is being looked at. Now if only the 'specialist team' had said that. I'm fully aware that there are bound to be a few problems with this kind of software, and that it takes time to make things work right for everyone.

Maybe they could use the Microsoft Mobile Update function to put this right when they find a solution. That would be very neat.

Re: WLM problems?

Not a problem, I can't say more than let you know that matters are being taken care of, but the info I've given is the least I can do.
