To test this input a new "test" contact from the PC and see if this syncs, and also one from the device, and see if that syncs. If they do, then you have no problems with com ports or activesync itself. The problem lies within the contacts that won't sync. It's just a question of finding out where. The notes file, and the photos are the most common causes.
Some people have just recreated the 'non syncing' contacts in order to get that first full sync.

hello Marisa
I just did as you say and created a new contacton the pc and one on the device (no Notes on either) and they have both appeared on PC and device.
When I tried to just make a change to one with notes it would not accept that. It seems that I can only get it to accept a change where I remove the notes altogether.
I agree that in order to get it done now, changing the nonsyncing contacts and appointments is a "workaround" but for the future where does that leave me?
I would never be sure if my new contacts and or appointments were on the device without having to check each one as I did them and I would have to manually input notes on the device.
Please do not get me wrong. having worked almost solidly on this for 27 hours, I REALLY appreciate the fact that you have now narrowed it down for me.
I just talked to my friend as I knew she had an orange SPV, she uses windows mobile 2003 and activesync 3.8? and she tells me it has always worked like a dream (What a friend eh! she could have fibbed a bit)
Thanks again
Elly

Re: HTC touch, WM6 activesync 4.5 outlook 2003 windows XP and PROBLEM!!
Do you use any 3rd party PIMs?
eg
Pocket Informant
Agenda Fusion/One
Agendus
Pocket Breeze
Spb Diary
I found that with Agendus, it put some strange symbols & stuff in my notes on some contacts/appointments, and also made some of my appointments appear as though they had attendees when they most definitely didn't! If it could do that, then maybe some of these can do similar things which might be affecting the sync.
Having said that, I have probably a similar setup to yours, outlook 2003, HTC Touch (original ROM), Activesync 4.5 and (touch wood), am not having this problem. I use AgendaOne and Pocket Breeze. However, when I tried Agendus, I had some problems.
The only other time I had a problem was when I added some appointments via my device, then went to synchronise, and had to interrupt the sync before it was finished. The new appointments never sync'd after that, and I had to remove them and add them again. (it was only 4 so not too bad, but has made me very conscious of this issue since). It was as though, because it had started a sync, it had those items down as 'done', and refused to do them again.
Hope you can find a solution to this.

Forgot to say, I could not resist playing around a bit more and my appointments that wont sync have notes. if I add something on my device and put a note on it there it does not sync onto the PC?

Re: HTC touch, WM6 activesync 4.5 outlook 2003 windows XP and PROBLEM!!
I'd usually suggest this as a last resort, but it seems to me like you're getting to that stage. Firstly, make sure you're running service pack 3 for Office 2003. If not install it and then, uninstall activesync and then reboot and reinstall activesync then try again.
If this doesn't work I've heard of exporting all your contact, deleting them and then importing them can have some success.
I know there have been a lot of issues with Outlook 2003 and syncing. Many of you will remember that Outlook 2003 was NEVER shipped with devices. MS went from shipping 2002 to a trial of 2007.

I think this is a good idea. Fortunately (in this case), activesync won't sync sub folders within contacts, so if it was me, I would first make a backup of my outlook (pc) contacts onto a .pst file (just in case). Then - without the device cradled/attached, I would move all the pc outlook contacts into a subfolder of contacts - then delete the partnership in activesync, and then start a new one. After everything else is sync'd, then I would move the contacts back into the main contacts folder a few at a time, and watch to make sure they sync. The ones that won't sync, try opening the contact on the pc, editing the note, and trying again. If that doesn't work, you will have to re-input the 'missing' contacts again.
I had to do this with my actual notes, where some of them wouldn't sync, for reasons known only to God and microsoft - and I'm not sure about microsoft. Good luck.

I don't think the moving of the contacts will do it. I think they need to effectively be created from scratch which the excel import does.

I'm not sure about contacts, it worked with notes, and is very quick & easy, but then so is re-importing them. Also, by moving, you can immediately see which are the troublesome contacts etc.
Maybe try one way, and if that doesn't work, try the other! Never let it be said that we don't have any ideas on how to solve problems!

Hi
I have checked and I am using SP3 for office 2003.
So here goes with the export and import of contacts. I have tried that and its was the same result. I exported all my contacts to another folder deleted them off the device. reimported them into outlook synced again and same result
However, I might try using the free 6 month trial of outlook 2007 that came on the HTC disk with my device if there are known issues with 2003.
thanks again
Elly
But not just yet!!

Well, if/when you do, can you post back and let us know how you get on? I've been thinking of updating my outlook, but don't know anyone with 2007 to tell me if it's worth it or not. Anyway, good luck with it, hope it works for you.
