Tom Tom versus Copilot 7 ?

Hi All,
I have been using Copilot 7 on my new Orbit 2 phone for about a month now, & I must say, I don't think much of it.

Has anyone tried it & the gone to TomTom? If so, do you find it any better?

What sort of cost is involved in buying TomTom?

Can I try first?

Your view will be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Mitch

Hi mitch, I have to say I agree with you regarding Co Pilot I find Tomtom much better for everyday use, more reliable and has a more intuitive interface.

There is no trial version available but it is not that expensive to buy £66.79 for the basic package, the best place to buy is from Tomtom themselves anything on Ebay is usually pirated.

Have a look here

Re: Tom Tom versus Copilot 7 ?

I have used TomTom for some time on an Orbit 1 and found it to be excellent. It was also an advantage that I use TomTom in the car as well and appreciated the same interface for both.

A few months ago I upgraded to an Orbit 2 and received CoPilot 7 bundled with it, so decided to give it a go. I have been using it for some time now and am about to throw it out and reinstall TomTom.

In comparison to TomTom I fo not find the user interface ease or quick. With CoPilot I find that the speed, or performance of the navigation is slow and overall I am just not impressed.

I have not done any kind of structured test and maybe not given CoPilot a fair change so this is just a subjective opinion. I would be interested in the views of anyone else who has used both products on Windows Mobile.

Re: Tom Tom versus Copilot 7 ?

One point I would make is that the TomTom licensing and support is notoriously poor and their map coverage isn't exactly exhaustive. It's alright if you live, work and travel in the main countries and regions but move outside of that and you're stuffed. I mean, they've only just got around to adding ROI and I'm still waiting on the Channel Islands and Isle of Man. The last time I checked, their "Western Europe" maps didn't include Malta either. I'm not sure where they think Malta is if it isn't in Western Europe. But if you stick to the likes of mainland UK, France, Spain etc then it's not an issue.

I tend to go through 3 - 4 devices a year, and TomTom just simply do not support this kind of activity. If you change your device more than once a year you're better off stearing clear of TomTom.

I have and use both, and find that the traffic alerts and mapping are far better on CPL, but the routing is miles better on TomTom. The routing must be able to be tweaked to be as good as TT, but I have still to find settings to achieve this.

What is it you don't like about CPL?

Re: Tom Tom versus Copilot 7 ?

I bought CPL for the Ameo but soon re-licensed Tomtom so I could use that instead!

The interface on CPL is far better than Tomtom but the routing, safety camera database and instructions weren't as good. I found it overused the instructions 'Bear left' and 'Bear right' and was often confusing in the use of them. I once ended up in a filter lane with no choice but to turn right because of it . Although I could probably have adjusted it, the instructions also seemed rather late in coming for some turns.

Sorry, but my vote goes to Tomtom.

Re: Tom Tom versus Copilot 7 ?

I've only briefly used CPL7 when I got my Orbit 2. Looked nice and interface seemed somewhat easier to use but at the end of the day TT6 gets me to the locations and CPL7 was a bit ropey as is the £2500 system in my car!

I'll stick with TT6 for now.

I have mentioned in another related thread that I think the routing algorithm in CPL is poor, compared to iGO2006, iGO8 and TTN6 (all of which I own)

1) CPL cannot get me from my office to home by the fastest route- all the others can. CPL's route is about 10 minutes longer, on a 22 mile journey

2) Last week my son needed to go to Milton Keynes, so used CPL on the Orbit2 to plan a route. We used the 'Quickest Route' option with all settings as default, being a new installation. It came up with 66 miles and 1hr 35, which seemed a bit long. We replanned the route using the 'Avoid Motorways' option, and it came up with 56 miles and 1hr 15 minutes. So, my query is, why didn't the 'Quickest Route' choose this one? Once again, iGO chose the correct route at the outset; didn't try TTN.

I agree about the instructions in CPL- they can be 'tweaked' but still miss instructions, especially if there are 2 manoeuvres close together.

My rankings are 1) iGO8; 2) iGO2006 (but maps are a bit old now!); 3) TTN6; 4) CPL7
