Connecting to an Asus EE PC

Hiya bods and boffins!

Does anyone know if it would be possible in theory to connect a WM phone to an Asus EEE PC 900? I am not concerned with syncing outlook and contacts. What I would like to do is use the phone as a modem and have true "mobile internet" anywhere using my network data tarriff on O2 (which is unlimited free!). I know this can be done using bluetooth but I'm not sure if the Asus has bluetooth capabilities.

Basically what I need to know is, do you need to be connected via Activesync to use a WM phone as a modem? If so I reckon I'm stuffed with the EE PC as it doesn't run windows.

Many thanks

Re: Connecting to an Asus EE PC

The quickest way would be to put windows on it

However, I'm fairly sure it's possible. I've been looking at it too and have come accross a few guides on the Internet that suggest it can be done. Most of them seem to involve replacing the Eee's OS with a version of Ubuntu and then downloading some Linux software for connecting Windows Mobile Devices.

As I say, I haven't done it myself as I don't yet have an Eee, but reports suggest it's complicated but do-able.

Re: Connecting to an Asus EE PC

Hi Gavin

Which linux os do you have on it?

Reason i ask is that with ubuntu/eeebuntu it's really easy to do but with the xandros that it comes with i couldn't work it out.

The other route you could take is use an app called wmwifirouter which turns the device into a wifi hotspot (sort of).

Re: Connecting to an Asus EE PC

Actually, on a slightly related topic, does anyone know where I could get an image of the OS that DOES come on the Eee PC? Either as an ISO or, even better, as a VMWare virtual Machine. It'd be nice to have something to demo to the wife in order to convince her it really IS a good idea to spend £180 on a new laptop the size of a portable DVD player.

EDIT

Turns out VmWare maintain a library of ready-built virtual machines including a virtual EeeXandros build, so anyone can try before they buy!

Yes it can be done. I have Ubuntu on my eeepc and it works just fine. SynCE is what you're looking for.
