Cool Setting up ActiveSync via Bluetooth

Hi all,
Not knowing hiw to link to any post quite yet, I have copied a few sentences down from my other post earlier from another phone section...

Q. Are you having trouble syncing your Kaiser and Laptop/PC using bluetooth?

Then this is how I have done it...

A. Basically you have to match up both Bluetooth COM ports for each device.

Unfortunately MS can't do this automatically ota (over the air) because every different bluetooth adapter in a laptop uses different COM ports depending on your configuration.

This is how I did mine...and you don't have to start off by connecting via USB either.

1. Wipe out all sync profiles relating to previous attempts in both devices and start afresh (including clearing the device from the laptops activesync too makes it easier).

2. Go back into your Laptop Active sync connection settings and make sure the box "Allow connections to one of the following" is ticked.

3. Select a COM Port from the drop down list. Mine is COM7, however every device uses a different one depending on your bluetooth adapter as I have previously said.

4. To find which one to use, turn on your laptop bluetooth and go into Control Panel. Open the Bluetooth Local COM settings or whichever you have in there. You should get a list of 12 or so COM ports available.

5. Note the COM port number that is usually marked in the list as: "LocalCOM-Client" (my laptop is a DELL D810 with a Toshiba BT chip newly added this week)

6. Put this COM port in your LAPTOP activesync connection settings as in step 2 above.

7. Close the Laptop's activesync settings and make sure your BT is discoverable on your laptop.

8. Now go back to your PDA and set up a Bluetooth partnership.

You must use password/keyword protection to set up a secure partnership and MAKE SURE use a 6 to 8 digit/character password. Less than this won't work properly, if at all... (a qwirk, but true, for BT activesync).

On connecting you will know the com port you chose on the laptop will be the correct one when you see Activesync as an option to pick as a service during the partnership process on you pda (wireless stereo, or headset is also usual but will not work).

9. Select the Activesync service and finish off by confirming the partnership etc.

NOTE: If you do not see Activesync in the service selection cancel the settings completely on your PDA and go back to the laptop and select a diferent COM port by repeating the steps above again from step 2 above.

10. Go to you PDA and open the activesync application. Click on Menu and select "connect via bluetooth" .

Voila! Your laptop and pda should then start to sync ota.
Have a bash...its much more convenient than using a cable all the time.

I thought so too - I will have to try it out as well. One less cable to hug about when travelling with my laptop.

Re: Setting up ActiveSync via Bluetooth

I see that this useful post has been made sticky for easy reference. Looking at the contents, I don't see anything Kaiser specific. If that is in fact correct, then it would be more easily found in the Bluetooth section of the forum. So is the post general enough to be moved?

Re: Setting up ActiveSync via Bluetooth

Very good post, thanks.

Now the last thing I would need to know about BT would be if it would be possible somehow to use a laptops BT as an access point for a WiFi connection. This is only because the WiFi radios in these phones SUCK so bad compaired to a laptops WiFi reception. You almost need to sit on top of the router you are using lol. But a laptop can almost be a whole block away and surf!

Is this possible? It would stand to reason that it could be done somehow, as my phone can be used as a modem for the laptop.
