UK: BT to roll out fibre! WooHoo!
At long last UK Broadband sufferers will start seeing an improvement in services as BT (the UK's major telco) announces it is to roll fibre out to the street cabinets (as cable companies do).
This investment is likely to cost about £1.5bn.
It's something we've discussed on this forum many times and I speculated that they could roll fibre out to cabinets (FTTC) and recover and sell the copper whereas fibre to the home (FTTP) would cost a lot more. Well someone was listening to me!

Good news indeed mate the only problem is the time it will take! Mind you 2012 is not too long to wait!

I'm glad to hear that information for you guys... I love my download speeds of 16mb/s and uploads of darn near 10mb/s... But with a fibre channel, who knows what can be done at home... Whooooooo.....

Yes this could be very good, i live next door to my exchange so my speed isnt bad as it is but fibre can only make it better! Just need ADSL2 and we may be dragged out of the broadband dark ages.

I'd love to feel happy for you all but my 2 smeg connection can only cope with bitter resentment.

Re: UK: BT to roll out fibre! WooHoo!
That can only be good news.
I only wish tiscali would stop larking about with my connection. One day 6megs the next 500kbps.
I'm on a month to month with them now so have been looking around for a better deal but because of where i live and the exchange not having other sp's equipment in it most of them want a fortune for the same service.
Better the devil for me until 2012 i guess.

Re: UK: BT to roll out fibre! WooHoo!
Needless to say Bassey, even though my connection shows as 8meg i very rarely get that at peak times, speed tests show it at about 3 if im lucky. Now 4am is a different story!

Re: UK: BT to roll out fibre! WooHoo!
I don't know why you're all crying, on the edge of Chorley I can only get about 1.7Mbps. Roll on Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) as I can see it (the street cab) from my study - 100 yards away. That should improve things dramatically!!
Maybe my whinging helped the BT Board make their decision! I would like to hope so!

That is a shocking speed you have there Tony, I am a mile away from the exchange and still manage to get an average 7mbps for downloads and 800kbps for uploads day or night!
