Re: OneCare to be discontinued...!???
Well it was being run on only one machine and as it is ending it's easier to make the change now and let the WHS Avast version monitor the other machines.
Des - was that Kaspersky comment serious?

Re: OneCare to be discontinued...!???
I'll be staying with OneCare until it's done. I'll re-evaluate the situation at that point.

that's what i was thinking. I'm using it on both laptops at home - but with possibility of getting one more PC for the home, OneCare would cope fine (and it wouldn't mean having to dip into my pocket for extra cash for purchasing more licenses).
OneCare really is good at what it needs to do. My partner (the technophobe) has found OneCare unobtrusive, discreet and means the laptop can be used without waiting for things to happen and load at the beginning.
I'll ride out the storm and see what happens with this. So far, no known issues with OneCare here - if it isn't broke, no need to go fixing

Re: OneCare to be discontinued...!???
The One Care team have now clarified the situation:
Facts about OneCare
In the wake of our announcement about our future core antimalware solution, code-named "Morro", there has been some misleading and inaccurate information about OneCare's quality, performance, and overall level of protection. We want to reassure all our customers with the truth of the matter:
· Fact: Customers of OneCare will remain protected for the life of their subscription. When “Morro” becomes available, we will work with our customers to help transition them on to this new security offering if they so desire.
· Fact: OneCare is tested by numerous organizations around the world and has been certified by two of the industry's leading independent certification authorities, ICSA Labs and West Coast Labs, as providing high-quality and effective protection against viruses, spyware, and other forms of malware. In addition, Windows Live OneCare has received VB100 awards since June 2007.
· Fact: In 3rd-party benchmarking by West Coast Labs in January of 2008, common applications started up to 70% faster in systems running OneCare than did systems running other leading consumer security solutions. Internally, we regularly conduct benchmark testing against other security suites that show OneCare still outperforms other comparable security and PC care solutions in the area of boot time and system impact.
· Fact: Microsoft is refocusing our efforts away from the for-fee OneCare security suite business and on to a quality no-cost anti-malware solution for a simple reason: We are committed to helping more consumers in more markets have a reliable, trusted experience on Windows PCs.
Microsoft remains committed to providing a core antimalware solution to help protect all our customers, in addition to the ongoing security improvements and protections offered by Windows and Internet Explorer. And by making this new solution available at no charge, we hope to be able to help the estimated 60% of consumers who still do not have up-to-date antimalware protection.
Once again, if you still have additional questions about this announcement, please visit the OneCare help center for free online support.

Re: OneCare to be discontinued...!???
I'm sure I've already seen that somewhere already. Has that swayed you at all D?
I can confirm the speed point. Compared to Symantec machines running OneCare run so much quicker.

Re: OneCare to be discontinued...!???
We use Symantec corporate AV at work but do not use the product for firewall protection and I have found it to be really "just there". It is quiet in updates and so far has never caused problems. Unfortunately as we are in a split network (merger) I actually use Sophos which upto a few years ago I would have recommened. Recently though the update process has been awfull and hanging PCs whilst it does its work. This may be down to its console and network config but that is another issue (I really do not like the new eneterprise cosole - sorry Sophos). Sophos also has been causing real issues with false positives wrt encrypted files.
I used to use AVG (paid version) but the the integrated firewall drags the system down and is a real pain to turn off (for installs and large scale copying etc).
So Onecare was a dream & worked well and although it would keep reminding you to turn the firewall back on even though you had said "turn off for an hour" it really was install and forget. So I will miss it.
Current thinking is back to AVG but free version (no integrated firewall).

Re: OneCare to be discontinued...!???
I used to love AVG but that was version 7, version 8 with the problems that have been reported have put me off going back to it.
Now that I've changed the last machine over to Avast I'll stick with it on all machines as it runs well, seems not to have a big footprint and suits me.
If / when MS release Morro I'll revisit.
