HTC Diamond - Full Orange press release

ImageLondon, 6th May, 2008: Orange today announced the availability of the HTC Touch Diamond in its Signature devices range. Orange has selected the Diamond as the first platform for its latest multimedia services, using the phone’s rich 3D-graphics engine and powerful mobile internet capabilities to deliver enhanced applications and services, including Orange Photo, Orange Music, Orange TV and Orange Downloads.

The HTC Touch Diamond was developed as part of Orange’s Signature programme. Orange’s approach is to work closely with device manufacturers to customise their phones with a simpler, more intuitive user-experience. Whether customers want to download the latest track or watch TV, Orange integrates the relevant applications into the entire device experience. For the Diamond, Orange has developed enhanced versions of its Signature applications, and has worked closely with HTC to integrate them more deeply into the phone’s operating system. This means the applications work even better together - and with the phone - for a more intuitive customer experience, for example:
Image

· Orange Photo lets users to share photos with online communities via an instant upload facility. Users can automatically upload photos from their device album to an online album of their choice

· Orange Music lets customers manage their music easily in a single place. The Orange Music store provides access to more than one million tracks for over-the-air download and customers can manage their complete music library via their mobile or PC

· Orange Downloads delivers all new content, such as 3D games, ringtones and wallpapers, directly to the handset, making it easily viewable before purchase and providing an instant link to the download

· Orange TV includes instant access to the biggest selection of live mobile TV channels (up to 61) and over 3,000 videos. For an improved experience viewing Orange is planning to introduce HDTV services starting from this year

Olaf Swantee, EVP of Orange’s global mobile operations, says, “Our long-standing relationship with HTC meant they shared their phone concept and worked with us from the earliest stage. This early collaboration is important to us because at Orange, we know that the right multimedia experience is about more than just the phone. Our approach is to select and test the best phones and integrate our applications, combining them with access to the Orange World portal, the best tariffs, integrated billing, a user-friendly interface and excellent customer support.”

Olaf adds, “With the Diamond from Orange we have created a unique phone which has taken advantage of Orange’s latest service innovation to build upon the consistently rich experience customers expect from Orange.”

Peter Chou, president and CEO, HTC Corp says, “Today we mark a new era in mobile phone evolution, an era where beauty and size integrate with uncompromising innovation at broadband speed. The HTC Touch Diamond will make browsing the Web and using Web-enabled applications just as practical and easy to use as making calls.”

Orange Signature phones have been available since 2002, when Orange and HTC launched the first SPV Smartphone. The improved customer experience that Signature phones provide is proven by increased usage, loyalty and ARPU amongst Orange Signature customers. Today, more than 70% of Orange’s handset purchase volumes are part of the Signature range.

Olaf concludes, “The combination of Orange’s innovative services with HTC’s new handset will enable Orange customers across Europe to enjoy the latest and greatest Orange multimedia experience. The HTC Touch Diamond is the most complete addition to our Signature range of phones to date.”

Available in the UK from July, the HTC Diamond from Orange will be rolled out across France, Spain, Poland, Romania, Switzerland and Belgium in 2008.

Re: HTC Diamond - Full Orange press release

Hm- I don't know quite how to interpret that!

Are Orange being innovative in providing a whole raft of customised services to users, with a common interface, or is this just another Orange phone with locked down applications, forcing the user to buy Orange's overpriced content?

Hopefully they haven't gone too far in 'working closely with HTC' to prevent users flashing a less customised ROM; I personally might prefer T-Mo or O2's results of 'working closely with HTC'

Orange policy has been to put the Orange specific apps on all their 'signature' phones, of all types including WM. So far it has always been possible to use the OS facilities to turn these apps off or install alternatives, so I'd assume that is Orange policy too.

Sadly it is streaming. Until the UK government frees up some spectrum for DVB-H or similar technology then streaming TV is going to be a relatively poor experience.

It does indeed look as if Orange will strangle the Diamond with it's own user interface as usual, which is very disappointing.

Regarding the TV streaming it will as usual be the same old poor quality, there are devices being released with a built in DVB-T tuner and all free to air digital channels will therefore be available, one notable device is the E-Ten v900 which looks very promising.

Re: HTC Diamond - Full Orange press release

I'm not sure we'll officially see DVB-T in the UK. Our TV licensing system doesn't work with that model. In Germany for example using DVB-T is not free - you pay a subscription for each TV set you own. That can easily be applied to a DVB-T mobile device or a PC with a DVB-T encoder.

In the uK we may be able to bypass subscription fees by buying an unlocked/unsubsidised DVB-T mobile device from abroad, to get access to the basic UK Freeview channels, but don't expect the UK mobile operators to offer them. Technically it won't be legal.

The European commission has already decided that DVB-H will be the standard. The licensing issue for mobile devices will work because the mobile networks can charge a subscription for a mobile TV service and incorporate a license fee into that. This type of service has the potential to access any channels you want.

Back on topic - the HTC Diamond does look very nice!

Unfortunately, Orange have a nasty habit of embedding some of their customisations in the main ROM, rather than the Ext_ROM making it very hard to circumvent them.

They have then been known to add Application Locking preventing more mainstream (and free!) programs being installed/run.

There will in due time probably be some App Unlocking software developed by one of the stalwarts, but until then we will need to be sure the device is usable before splashing out. As an example, look at Orange's recent announcment of Orange Live MEssenger- its version of WLM which it omits from its ROMs. OLM is a paid for service, and Orange utilize port blocking to prevent the use of the free WLM. Current devices have been around long enough for these strategies to be worked around, but a new device may be harder to 'crack'

Re: HTC Diamond - Full Orange press release

Ouch I did not know that Orange were that restrictive in their practices.

Ref the DVB-T v DVB-H - does that mean in the UK it is illegal to receive DVB-T on a phone, but it is legal on a TV - damned silly situation!

Re: HTC Diamond - Full Orange press release

I still wonder about the whole "Orange" branding. Has Orange ever been a cool colour? Why didn't they call themselves "Electric Blue" or something?

Seriously though, when you see all the quality themes out there, like the Vista Blue's, the Windows Mobile Green and the HTC Black who wants an "Orange" phone? I can live with their name being Orange and the silly Orange square, but please, I DON'T WANT AN ORANGE PHONE! There's nothing worse than waking up with a hangover and seeing Orange!

Sorry, rant over.......
