Re: Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 Reviewed

Am I the only one who is LESS impressed having seen the video?

Okay, it was mostly pretentious marketing <insert favourite phrase> which always annoys me but the few seconds of XPERIA footage left me underwhelmed.

Re: Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 Reviewed

The iPhone is smooth looking and we all know how inflexible that turned out to be. It's really easy to make something run smoothly. It's much more difficult to make it run smoothly AND be very flexible. That's where I think Vitol have scored with Winterface. A bit of tinkering (though not too much!) and that is going to be brilliant. It really is SO fast and SO simple yet allows you to do pretty much whatever you want with it.

Re: Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 Reviewed

There are reports on the Internet (citing sources at Expansys) that the XPERIA X1 is due for launch in the UK during the first full week in October (6th-12th). Expansys say they have received a few demo models and that launch price will be £590 SIM Free.

In fairness to Expansys, their predicted launch dates are proving to be an awful lot more reliable than in the past. The Touch Cruise was delivered early (got mine the Monday before it's quoted Friday launch) and they got their first stock on Touch Pro's in last night, having quoted today as the launch date for the last several weeks.

This is in direct contrast to a few years ago when they would have products with "Expected arrival: 7 days" displayed for weeks on end!

Anyway, I, for one, can't wait for a local store to get this in so that I can have a proper play. It definitely looks like a device where a "hands on" test would be required to make up one's mind as to it's suitability.

I think it's a lot of money. These devices are so expensive these days.

Re: Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 Reviewed

They do seem to be going back up again. I remember the first few smartphones I owned cost upwards of £600 at launch but the price would rapidly come down to the £300 mark before the next one was released. Then, as they became more popular and economies of scale/competition came in, we started seeing the launch price dip below £400 for the top-end models and nearer £300 for some of the middle-of-the-road devices.

Today, the mid-range devices are launching nearer £450 and the top-end stuff is creeping back up to the £600 mark. Could this just be a result of global inflation? After all, these things are basically built out of the materials that are getting significantly more expensive (Oil, precious metals etc) and require huge amounts of energy to produce and ship.

Just for comparison, I got the Touch Cruise at launch for less than £380 Sim Free. The Touch Diamond, six months later, launched at about £480. The only significant differences between the two are a VGA screen and the internal storage - and the price of static RAM has plummeted!
