Re: Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 Reviewed

They're sought after articles though. I think we're just getting mugged off. I bet HTC knocks them out at about $100 each.

Re: Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 Reviewed

Time for a noobie question, but I am getting a little confused here...
With the Xperia having a different screen resolution (480 x 800?) does this mean that VGA (and QVGA) current apps (unless updated by the developers) will not work on this device?

Re: Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 Reviewed

My understanding is that they will work but may only use part of the screen. However, a lot of apps are written with differing resolutions in mind now. Users of the Toshiba Portege G900 should be able to confirm/deny this as it had a similarly non-standard resolution display.

Re: Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 Reviewed

Interestingly I've got a G900 and have had no issues what so ever with the 800x480 screen res. I also almost reviewed the G910 (I had to send it back after only a couple of days) and it was a nightmare. I couldn't get hardly anything to load on it. None of the GPS programs would take. Here's the thing though, on the G900 if I had any issues I'd put it into portrait and it would install, and the when you open the device it would "just work" with landscape. With the G910, there is no portrait mode at all, not even a screen rotate option anywhere, and a lot of the software I tried just would not load in landscape mode.

Re: Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 Reviewed

i found with the Exec, I could load a lot of QVGA apps fine as long as I stayed in portrait mode.
So would QVGA apps run (-ish) on the Xperia? or would VGA be more ideal?

Re: Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 Reviewed

Hi guys

Since the Touch Pro came out the other day ... this has started an uncontrollable itch ...

I currently have a V1615 (TyTNII) and N95 8GB.

The reason for the N95 (aside from the fact that I got it free) was the genuinely Hi-8 resolution capable video capture, good stills and a real phone keypad. The N95 also had TV-Out for films etc but I have an ipod video, archos av5100 and psp slim with this ... so ... not a great driver for me. In addition it had a radio which I though might be fun ... but the reception is rubbish. My wife's t650 radio is superb.

The TyTN II was near perfect for me. A-GPS with CPL6, Google Maps and Visual IT Tubes works beautifully. I have (a now full) 6GB MicroSD HC which has been great. The keypad has been pretty good. I run all the apps I've listed before (recently moved to Mobile Shell from iLauncher because of Good Messaging Protector compatibility issues) without any problems ...

The only negatives where the camera - video worse than useless and stills ... nothing you'd want to keep or print (disappointing for a 3mp).

Since having a 4700 and trying the G900 (which gave me no compatibility issues with any of the software I have by the way - inc CPL6) I always thought VGA would be pretty but WVGA would be genuinely useful from the screen estate perspective.

Looking the Touch Pro ... it ticks many of the boxes - I would miss the tilt of the TyTNII ... it has more RAM which is always necessary ...

When thinking about it though it didn't really offer a whole lot more. It certainly couldn't get rid of the N95 and get me to a single device ... this being mainly because of the rubbish HTC cameras.

Looking at the review here :

http://smape.com/en/reviews//Sony_Er...A_X1-prev.html

which is very good but has some mistakes if you compare with the SE whitepaper below :

https://developer.sonyericsson.com/s...phonespecs.jsp

The X1 really does seem to do it.

It has WVGA which adds more than just pretty icons.
It has an SE 3.2mp camera which will compare with the other SE devices and should deliver the same video as the N95 8GN. Yes ... I know it is OEM'd by HTC, but the design and components are all SE.
It has a radio which should be the same as the T650s, so it should work well.
It has the same memory as the Touch Pro and the same CPU.
It also has a separate 3.5mm audio jack which is excellent for connecting to aux in on car and using decent headphones (even though I'm happy with my new Philips BT headset I mentioned in another thread).
It has a 1500mAh battery - bigger than anything I've had recently.

In addition it is also better built than the other HTC devices - I'm not complaining about them ... as they are solid, but it is always nice having metal (much like the lovely materials on the 4700). Amazing that it is thinner and lighter than the Pro even though it is slightly taller and wider.

The mistake in the review above is that it says the Sony doesn't have hardware 3D acceleration .... but if you look in the linked manual above, the features say :

Features include:
•3-inch Wide-VGA (800x480) TFT 65K color LCD
•XPERIA™ panel concept
•Unified Media Experience
•3.2-megapixel camera with Touch auto focus
•Video capture and playback up to 30 fps
•Integrated WiFi and A-GPS
•Mobile broadband
•Handsfree headset with a 3.5 mm audio jack, USB charger, USB cable provided in the kit
•Internet Explorer Mobile browser
•HSDPA 7.2Mbps, HSUPA 2Mbps
•Windows Mobile® 6.1 Professional
•YouTube support (3GPP playback)
•FM radio, streaming audio/video
•Video telephony
•Bluetooth™ 2.0

•HW 3D Graphics

•Supports microSD™ High Capacity memory card
•Exchange /IMAP4/POP3 e-mail
•Quad-band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz)
•Tri-band HSPA X1a (850/1900/2100 MHz) X1i (900/1900/2100 MHz) )

It also has a touch interface that is apparently almost on a par to the Touch Pro but with more potential should SE and others develop for it.

The price is going to be difficult ... but I struggle to see anything else coming close at the moment.

I'm aware the keyboard isn't to everyones taste ... I guess we'll all have to try it to determine if it really is an issue ...

Any thoughts re something I'm missing ... let me know.

Cheers

Paul.

Looks about right to me, worth adding though that the Touch Pro does have the same matel casing than the Diamond. Still not sure on the X1 whether the screen is a surface type like the Diamond / Orbit or or if it is of the older recessed type.
