Syncing Calendar with MS Exchange Server

I've decided to try and get my PPC to sync with Exchange Server so that if my secretary makes an appointment in my diary when I'm out, it will appear on my PPC. I'm syncing over GPRS for the first time as I write but the progress bar is barely 1/10th of the way through and it's been running for 1/2 an hour. I do have a lot of appointments (maybe 3 to 4,000) and I do need to sync them all. Is this normal ? ps I have been syncing with my Outlook Calendar on my Work PC through wired Active Sync up to now.

Re: Syncing Calendar with MS Exchange Server

for 4000(!!!) calendar appointments, that does seem like normal, although 4000 is going to take some time.
Most people dont' sync that much information over so I'd say just let it take it's time.
Do you have 3G at all? Or just 2G GPRS?

Re: Syncing Calendar with MS Exchange Server

Are you trying to sync older appointments, or are your 4000 in the future?

The 1st sync will take a very long time for this size of data, and your PIM.VOL file will be quite big (did you previously sync all the appointments over A/S?)

Subsequent syncs will be much faster as they will only be dealing with changed data. I only have about 300 appoinmtments and 150 contacts, but still always do the initial Exchange Sync over WiFi

Re: Syncing Calendar with MS Exchange Server

The majority are past appointments but I like to be able to search for a meeting that took place in the past - who with, where etc. I was connecting over G but had the "brainwave" of using the full power of HSPDA. Stopped the sync and restarted and it took less than 20 mins. The appointments were all previously synced over A/S.

Anyway, sorted now. Thanks for the input.

I was sceptical that Calendar would sync with my home PC after enabling Echange Server - but hey - it does.

Re: Syncing Calendar with MS Exchange Server

Rick,

Everything apart from E-mail will still sync with a standard PC if you have an Exchange Server relationship active.

Glad you're all sorted!

Re: Syncing Calendar with MS Exchange Server

I didn't think it would so had avoided syncing with Exchange Server even though it has obvious benefits. Really glad I tried it now.

Re: Syncing Calendar with MS Exchange Server

When we see WM6.1 and Exch 2007 sp1 the sync with the exchange becomes even stronger. Some of the integrations with live comms server and sharepoint look to be most impressive.

Re: Syncing Calendar with MS Exchange Server

As a complete novice in such matters it does seem to me that A/S 4.5 (as well as earlier versions) is poor software which has a mind of its own. Syncing through cable can take 20 seconds or 20 minutes and sometimes just refuses to find the device. I've tried loads of "solutions" that I've found on the net but none seem to make it any more stable - firewall on, off, AV likewise, etc etc.

Re: Syncing Calendar with MS Exchange Server

I fully agree, and to be honest, WMDC, the Vista version is, if anything, worse. For this reason, unless I'm ROM flashing I don't use activesync at all. All my contacts and mail are synced over the air at all times.
