Re: STRANGE BUT TRUE CHARGING YOUR DEVICE - MINI USB

No probs.

I find personally that I can charge my SP5m and Mini S with the same cable but my TomTom requires a seperate one!

I've seen a similar thing.

My son has a Moto V3 for which he lost the charger. My Exec has a similar Mini USB socket, so we tried this, and it didn't work.

When the original Moto charger showed up again, it worked OK with the Exec and the V3.

I needed a Car Charger for the Exec, so I could use TTN5. At the time the only suitable one seemed to be the Moto V3 charger- again this worked fine, and of course also charges the V3. Latterly it has also worked OK with the MiniS.

Re: STRANGE BUT TRUE CHARGING YOUR DEVICE - MINI USB

When the site's down it gives you a chance to use your device !!!

So;-

I've found that you can charge your Exec/Universal/SPV M500 with any 12v car charger with mini USB. All you have to do is make sure the device is turned off BEFORE inserting the mini USB. You can switch it on afterwards but not before. In fact if you insert the mini USB with the device on, swith it off, then back on and it will charge!! Explain that one !!

At least I only need one charger in the car now. Still haven't worked out how to charge the V3 at home other than with it's own mains charger but that's not a problem.

That makes sense of something that confused me the other day, I had a cig lighter charger and USB cable coming out of it, I forget where I got the cable or what it cam ewith but it wasn't a PPC one etc, I had it plugged into my GPS for a while which was cool all charged up and so on, I then switched it to the Pro and no charge???? I then did something else and the Pro switched off as per my power saving settings, when I switched it back on voilla charge light came on, unplugged the USB cable and plugged it back in and no charge light at that point I had to get into work and hadn't thought about it again until this post, so I'm gonna try this again when I go home tonight but it would lokk like you hit the nail on the head mate

Simply using a charger with a higher current rating (ie 1A rather than 500mA) will not nessessarily mean that the device charges any quicker. Current can't be "pushed" into a device, it is simply allowed to flow through. The thing that affects the flow is resistance. This is basic Ohms law, and the formula is I = V/R, where I is current, V is voltage and R is the resistance of the device (I'm simplifying this slightly as I'm not taking impedance into account (coils) but its close enough).

So basically the amount of current flow through the device is dependant on the resistance of the charging ciruitry within the device. So improved charging would only occur if the charging circuitry could vary the resistance to increase the charging current, and I doubt this happens.

True, but applying less current may still give some charge, but not at the required rate. I was infering that you wouldn't be able to "turbo charge" by using a more powerful adapter, but that you may be able to "trickle charge" using a less powerful one.
