USB charging shocker!

All

Obviously I'm going to call O2 about this issue today but I wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this problem. A few nights ago my Exec was charging and synchronising over the PC-PDA USB cable and was sat on my desk for a few hours like this. At the end of the night I shut down my pc and grabbed the Exec to unplug it from the USB cable. As I touched the metallic front plate of the Exec I got a quite strong static/electric jolt. Being the first and only time this had happened I put it down to the possibility that I might have been carrying a little static.
However..... I plugged it into the mains-pda charger last night and once connected I placed it on my desk. As I was putting it down I was partially touching the metallic front plate again. Now at this point you must excuse my lack of experience in the electric shock field, but the casing felt like it was vibrating for some 5 to 10 seconds. I held the front plate again and once more felt this tingling/vibrating feeling through my fingers.
I obviously checked that I was not recieving a call or text with my phone on silent. I actually turn my volume up at night. I confirmed that WI-FI was not on so that I would not be recieving a vibrate when a network was detected. I genuinely believe I'm getting some kind of sustained buzz of electricity through the casing.
Anyone else feeling the vibe???!!!!

Re: USB charging shocker!

That does not sound good

I've never had a shock or anything similar to what you describe from my Exec and I've had it since early November....

Speak to O2 quickly!

Regards,

Definitely give O2 a call, never seen anything like that at all, so you may well have a defective unit!

Re: USB charging shocker!

Thanks guys. I called O2 and they told me they didn't want me getting shocks (Awww I feel kinda luved) so I should send the offending article off to them for repair or replacement. Apparently repair has a rather indefinite turnaround time. Replacement is just a like for like exchange. Obviously went for the quicker option but I'm just hoping I get a nice shiny new one or at least one that is in as good a condition as my current (no pun intended) one is.

I'm backing up my data tonight and I just got another jolt when I plugged it into the usb cable. Now where are those pink marigolds.

This is interesting. I've never had a shock (touch wood!) and I am extremely pleased with my Exec but from day one when its plugged into the mains charger if I touch the top case i get a rather subtle and tingley vibe! Thought this was the norm albeit a bit strange! Havent tried this through USB cable though.

Re: USB charging shocker!

Hi Mr X. I agree the Exec is a cracking little machine. I signed up for a 2 year contract to get the deal I did and I'm not regretting a moment of it. After yet another little jolt (and I'm not going to do any more testing) I can confirm that when it's charging and sync'ing through the USB I get a small but very definite zap, but when using the mains charger I get exactly as you said, a subtle, tingling feeling across the grey face-plate. It kinda' makes the hairs on your hand stand up.

Don't bother with the marigolds either. It's gardening gloves you need.

Perhaps one of our well connected admins can put the word out to people in the biz so that this can be sorted.

Limera- if you send your Exec back (which obviously you will!) make a note of the IMEI number and also mark the battery in some way, so you will know if the device &/or battery has really been replaced. Some users have reported getting new devices, but with their old batteries installed which is a problem if it turns out to be a battery problem!

O2 have, in the past, usually replaced faulty devices with new ones, but they do reserve the right to repalce with a refurbished one if the faulty unit is more than 1 month old.

To be fair I should point out that the incident was with T Mobile, not O2. T Mobile's repairs department told me it was their policy NOT to exchange batteries, which was a bit daft since they sent me 2 replacement brand new handsets instead of 1 replacement battery. In the end got it sorted by going into a shop who just informally took the duff battery off me and gave me a new one.

So Neil's advice is good advice, but hopefully O2 will get it right first time.

And I've pointed O2 at this thread so we will see if we get any feedback.

Guys ref the problem over the shock Exec's - can you please drop me a PM (Private mail) with the EMEI numbers of the devices affected.

O2 have asked me to obtain the data so they can pass it on to the corret teams and track the issue down.
