An increasing number of Windows Mobile devices are the Phone Edition variant, which include built-in telephony services. As well as voice calls, this allows for mobile communications such as MMS, Mobile Internet and WAP services.
Most PE devices in the UK are supplied by a mobile operator, with the connection settings already configured, but as new ROM versions are released, or if users prefer to configure their devices in “basic” format, the settings need to be manually applied.

The following is a list of the various UK operator’s settings, believed correct at the time of compilation (March 2006). They have been gathered from the operator’s own sites where possible, and from other internet sources.

General Instructions for all Connections
The connection settings are accessed by tapping Start/Settings/Connections/Connections
This takes you to a screen showing Internet Connections in the top half, and WAP (or Work) Connections in the bottom half. Each has options to add, or modify existing configurations.
Setting up Mobile Web connections
Mobile Web connections are used by mobile web browsers, email clients, and a number of third party applications like Weather, Newsreaders and RSS feeds etc.
Some operators do not allow Mobile Web connections, but only have WAP settings (including Virgin Mobile and Tesco Mobile). Others, including O2, don’t allow Pay as You Go customers to access Mobile Web pages, or the Mobile Web APN.
In the top half of the Connections configuration screen, tap Add Connection, or Manage Existing Connections. If adding, give the connection a suitable name, or if editing an existing connection, the name should already be present, with a “Radio Button” by its name. Tap “Edit”.
“Select a Modem” should be set for “Cellular Line (GPRS)” or “Cellular Line GPRS/3G”
Now click “Next” to start inputting the operator specific settings.

After these settings are input, tap “Finish” to save, then OK back to the Start screen. Windows Mobile 5 uses “Intelligent connection switching” and should connect as needed to the GPRS connection. WM2003 users can tap the connection icon in the Title Bar, and select a GPRS connection to open.
Setting up WAP Connections
All mobile operators use WAP settings to access their WAP pages. These still use Pocket Internet Explorer (on WM2003 devices and later) but pages have mainly text content, so load faster, display in a more compact format for small screens, and use much less data. Some operators are now using enhanced WAP services which include some graphics.
Most WAP services will not allow opening of standard web pages, and are constrained to a “ring fenced” set of pre-defined links.
WAP Connection settings are also used by most operators for sending and receiving MMS messages, so before setting up MMS specific settings in Messaging, it is necessary to have a WAP connection configured in Connections.
In the bottom half of the Connections configuration screen (see above for accessing this screen), tap Add a new modem Connection, or Manage Existing Connections. Setting up MMS Connections
Before you start configuring the MMS settings, make sure you have set up a WAP connection to your Mobile Operator as in the preceding instructions. Orange and BT Mobile users will need to add a specific MMS Connection in addition to their Web and WAP connections; all the others use the standard WAP gateway. Make a note of the name you given to your WAP profile- you will need to select this from a drop down list later in the configuration process.
Note that the majority of operators require the user to ring Customer Services to have MMS enabled on their accounts.
General Instructions for all Operators
These instructions are for Windows Mobile 5; earlier versions should have similar configuration screens. MMS settings are configured from the Messaging application. Open Messaging, then tap Menu/MMS Configuration.
The first screen allows you to make settings according to your personal preferences. Once these are selected, tap the “Servers” tab, from where you enter the operator specific settings. If there is already a profile present, you can tap it to see if the settings are correct for your operator. If so, then tap “OK”, and MMS should be operative. If incorrect, tap “Cancel” then at the configuration screen tap “New” and enter the following Operator settings.

Email Settings
As with any Email/messaging application, you can retrieve your emails from any POP3 or IMAP email server, regardless of your ISP (in this case, your mobile operator). For each account, you simply put in the relevant POP3 settings, username and password etc. Most of the mobile operators will only allow this via a full Mobile Web based connection- WAP connections don’t communicate with outside servers. The only general exception to this is if you use an email address from your mobile operator (for example, if you have a
name@o2.co.uk email address, you can access this via O2 Web or O2 WAP connections.
Sending emails is not so simple. Again, as with PC based ISP’s, you can generally only send emails via the operator’s own servers. Therefore, the smtp (outgoing mail) setting for your email accounts will need to point to that of the operator.
Most of the operators also allow “Authenticated” email sending, whereby you can send your mail via an Authenticated email service.

Having just moved to a new non-Phone Edition device linking with an Orange mobile phone, I thought it might be useful to add a link to Orange's excellent setup tutorial. Although specific to Orange, the principle should work with other providers, as long as the provider details are changed accordingly.
From the Orange Setup page, click 'Device Compatibility' and proceed from there, selecting Microsoft as the PDA manufacturer. This will lead you through device specific settings. Worked 1st time for me!
