GPS Shootout review

ImageGPS Shootout review

It's only when your GPS routes you the wrong way up a newly designated one way street that you realise your system is out of date. I was driving to a wedding a few weeks back using my trusty TomTom 5/O2 IQ combination as always when the aforementioned navigation catastrophe occurred. During the lengthy technophobic rantings from my wife that followed I was struck with an epiphany. It was time to upgrade. The price of peace can indeed be a costly one but in this case I decided £100 seemed a small price to pay.

For many people, the word GPS is synonymous with TomTom. Indeed this was true for me also, until I investigated a little further into navigator software world and discovered a plethora of other options. Unfortunately, as is so often, a vast choice can often bring about the "can't see the wood from the trees" syndrome and I was weighed down with choices before me. It was at this point I realised another famous 4WM shootout review was inevitable. To this end we've kindly been provided with the 6 of the most commonly used Pocket PC hardware and software GPS navigation systems available today. For your pleasure we will individually review each of the products below, and then finally, we will pit one against the other in an all out, no holds barred, head to head comparison.

Review Products

The product selected for review are:

Copilot Live (ver 7)
Pharos GPS Phone 600
Route66 Navigate 7

Garmin Mobile 10
iGO Navigator
TomTom Navigator 6

Test Hardware

As I'm sure you're all aware navigation software, complex as it can be, will often push our trusted devices to their performance limits. To try and determine the effects of this we'll test each package on a range of devices where possible. The majority of the testing will be performed using the following hardware:

HTC Touch.
Proporta supplied Freedom Bluetooth Keychain GPS reciever.
Proporta Alu Leather case for HTC Touch.
Proporta magnetic vehicle docking system.
Plantronics 655 Bluetooth Headset.

Feel free to click on the images, they will redirect you to the Proporta product web page.

The Touch, while light and compact is a relatively low powered device, so the HTC Kaiser (Vodafone v1615 variety) will also be used to test as a more powerful platform with integrated GPS.

The first product review, Copilot Live (7) will be published on Friday 26th October. Stay tuned!

Re: GPS Shootout review

Very interesting stuff mate. Is there an assumption that the IQ would not be able to cope with the latest versions of these apps? Just wondering why you are also changing your sat nav device?

Re: GPS Shootout review

The IQ is obviously smartphone, and with the Touch being my device of choice I decided PPC was the way to go. GPS wise the Keychain GPS is excellent. So pocketable. Did you see it hanging from the rear view mirror on the in car photo?

YES! Can't wait for both barrels to stop smokin on this one! I have to buy one of these nav map software apps soon for British Columbia Canada, and was just about to take the plunge with the biggest name brand TOM TOM.

Think I will unsaddle my horses for a spell and watch for the last one standing in this shoot out @ the 4WinMobile coral!

Let'er rip partner!

Re: GPS Shootout review

There is also a very good navigatino program called Netropa, it may look a little bit outdated but the programs works like a charm, love it. You can also use it in laptops as well.

Regarding the GPS there is also an interesting device even though it is for laptops only, the Deluo Mouse GPS which can be used either as a GPS or a mouse but not both at the same time heh GPS navigation in phones specially Windows Mobile ones is cool but I still prefer something with a bigger screen. To me 12 or 14" laptops offer the best relationship between features and portability
