Re: O2 XDA Zest Review!
I’ve been looking for a new mobile phone to combine the functions of my old Toshiba Windows Pocket PC and a MP3 player. The O2 Xda Zest seemed to offer a good solution so, based on this review, I bought a PayGo version a couple of weeks ago.
I inserted my (very) old O2 contract Sim Card which gives me 75 free anytime minutes per month, but doesn’t seem support GPRS. Other than internet connection via my mobile (which I don’t need), I don’t particularly want to change my old contract as it’s really good value for money, but I’d be interested to know what advantage, if any, would GPRS give me as I’m rather new to all this.
As far as the Zest is concerned, so far I’m well pleased with it, and offer the following for what it may be worth:.- My only grouse is that Voice Commander seems to be completely useless. Doesn’t seem to want to recognise anything I say (perhaps I’ve got the wrong kind of voice)!
- I’ve installed the PCM keyboard as recommended in the review, and agree that it’s much better than the default.one. However, I prefer to use the Letter Recogniser, which I find easier than the Block Recogniser .
- I’ve also installed Conduits PocketPlayer 4 which has support for touchscreens and works just fine – much better than the bundled Windows MediaPlayer. No documentation yet available, but a 30-day trial is available at http://store.conduits.com/pocketplayer.html. Activation costs $19.95.
- The CoPilot 7 trial is now expired, but I found it good and think I shall fork out £50 to activate it. It doesn’t have all the functionality of my stand-alone NavMan S70, but will serve as a good standby for times when I’m in another vehicle without satnav.
- I had some difficulty setting up my desktop, the Zest and ActiveSync to synchronise over Bluetooth, but I’ve now got that working well, thanks to some excellent guidance I found on this forum at http://www.4winmobile.com/forums/no-wires-wifi-bluetooth/14810-setting-up-activesync-via-bluetooth.html

I've heard voice commander can be a bit touchy. Personally I didn't have any problems with it. It is supposed to get better the more you use it apparently though.

Re: O2 XDA Zest Review!
Has anyone been able to find a USB to 3.5mm stereo jack adapter to allow the use of ordinary headphones with the Xda Zest, please?
I've been looking for one and thought I'd had success, but when it arrived it didn't fit the USB socket on the Zest.

Thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately this has the wrong type of plug. I've already bought one of these from another supplier, and it doesn't fit the socket on my Xda Zest.
It is squared off one side (see left hand picture)
What I need is the type shown in picture to the right, which shows both the socket and the plug.
Can anyone help, please?
Brian
Updated 1241 13/2/09 - pic of Xda Zest base showing socket now added.

Didn't your Zest come with one? I thought mine came with a Y splitter for power and a 3.5mm jack in the box?

The Y splitter allows you simultaneously connect the supplied USB charger and the supplied USB phones/mic - there is no USB to 3.5mm jeck included in the box, and no 3.5mm socket on the splitter. Wouldn't that have made life so much easier ??? !!!

Re: O2 XDA Zest Review!
Ah, I see, sorry. The device is also know as the Galaxy mini. Have you tried looking for a headphone adapter for that?

Re: O2 XDA Zest Review!
The connector type for the Zest is a mini USB type B if that is any help.
